LESSON PLAN

ORIENTATION, DIRECT EXPLANATION + MODELING (INTO)


The teacher will begin the lesson by explaining the objective. They will be learning a
new long o words. Next the teacher will ask two students to be her helper. The students will come up to the front of the class and pick a letter. The letters will be written
on large construction paper for the whole group to see. The letters will be, g and o.
The teacher will ask the volunteer students if they can make a word with those letters.
They will work to create GO. Next the teacher will ask the class what word they have
made. The class will respond with go. The teacher will then review with students
rules for long vowels. The activity will then continue until students have made a variety of long o words.

GUIDED PRACTICE (THROUGH)


The teacher will introduce the book, Splat the Cat: Blow, Snow, Blow. The teacher
will ask students to listen for long o words in the story. The teacher will stop on certain
pages and ask student to think and share with a partner the long o words that they
heard in the story.
Once the whole story has been read, the teacher will bring out the large snowman
poster board. The snowman image will be in the middle of the poster with blank space
around the image. Written in the middle of the snowman, will be the word snowman.
The teacher will ask the students to look at the word and point out that the spelling
pattern is ow. The teacher will instruct students on the new ow spelling and how it
makes the long o sound in words.
Next the teacher will have students complete a group sorting activity. They will sort
ow words from a variety of other words with the short o. Any ow words will be placed
on the snowman. All short o words will be placed on the poster board around the
snowman.

INDEPENDENT PRACTICE + FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT (BEYOND)


Students will be given a flip book. The flip book will contain pictures of 5 ow words.
The students will write the ow word and fill in a sentence using the word.
