Pre service Teachers Name: Lachlan Sperling
School: Primary School
Year level: 5
VELS Level: 5
Lesson Title: Lesson 1: Fraction Introduction
Lesson Duration: 12:00p.m-12:45p.m (45 mins)
Lesson Time and Date: 2/05/2016
Number of Proposed Students: 20 students
Lesson Aims

Level 5
Students will be able to identify and compare basic fractions and justify how they are
represented in a chart.

Learning Outcomes (use appropriate curriculum framework)

Discipline-based
Learning

MathematicsNumbers & AlgebraFractions and

Decimals

-Compare and order

common unit fractions
and locate and represent
them on a number
line(VCMNA187).

Standard/s
Level 5
Students order decimals and unit
fractions and locate them on a
number line. Students add and
subtract fractions with the same
denominator.

-Investigate strategies to
solve problems
involving addition and
subtraction of fractions
with the same
denominator (VCMNA1
88).
(Victorian Curriculum Assessment Authority, AusVELS Curriculum, May 2016)
Childrens Prior Learning (what do the children already know/what have they covered?)
The students will bring with them knowledge about fractions learnt from level 4 of the Victorian Curriculum:
Mathematics. Numbers & Algebra, Sub-strand: Fractions and Decimals.
This is the first time this topic has been introduced into the classroom this year.
The students will bring with them knowledge from their home life in sorting things fairly such as food and
drinks as well as experiences in the classroom where they have to share things fairly and effectively.

Teaching Skill Development (What do you want to develop as a teacher?)

Developing the students understanding on basic fractions as an introduction will help aid in further learning
in future lessons. This will be showed through a variety of groupings including constructing an anchor chart
as a whole group which can be used as a reference if there is any confusion, and then also constructing their
own fraction chart, identifying fractions and how much each fraction is worth.

Teaching and Learning Preparation (resources etc)

o 4 pieces of A4 paper per student
o Coloured A4 scrap paper
o Scissors
o Glue
o Pencils/textas
o Laptop & interactive whiteboard (to play intro video)
o Ruler

Session Structure
Lesson Phase
Orientation /Introduction

10 mins

o Introduce fractions and play the introduction video so that the students
can remember and are familiar with basic fractions
o Video Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yT1WuyxTCmo
o Brainstorm ideas as a whole class and create an anchor chart (see
example in lesson 1 examples below) highlighting what is a fraction,
vocabulary used, and examples of different types of fractions. This will
be used as a major reference point for the students so that if they are
confused or do not understand something, they can look at this chart
which could lead them on to the right path.
o Use examples that the students can relate to in real life to eg. Slices of
pizza, the number of drinks to share.
o Give students 1 minute to draw as many different ways as possible.
See what the results bring.

Activities

10-15 mins

Activity 1- Folding paper activity:

Hands on introduction activity- Students will receive 3 pieces of
A4 paper each and will fold one piece of paper into a half, one piece of
paper into a quarter and one piece of paper into an eighth.

o Where the folds are made on each paper, the students will use a
pencil/texta to draw down each folded line. Students will then label
each area on the fraction they make- for example, 1/8, 2/8, 3/8, 4/8 etc

so that when quizzed on comparing fractions, then they can use this as
another reference point.

20 mins

o Activity 2- Constructing a fraction chart:

o This activity includes the students using the remaining A4 piece of
paper that they have used as a poster. They will then collected 5
different coloured scrap pieces of paper and cut out 5 blocks 20cm
long each (using a ruler to measure this- add pic).
o The first block cut will represent 1 whole which will be pasted at the
top of the poster, the second block will be cut in half (using the ruler to
measure the halfway point) which will be represented as . The third
block will be cut into four different parts (using the ruler to measure
this) which will be represented as . The same will be done for 1/8
and 1/16 which will all be stuck down on the poster which will act as
another reference point for the students. (SEE FRACTION CHART
PIC IN LESSON 1 EXAMPLES BELOW)
PLAN B: If students are struggling to put together both of these activities,
an alternative that could be used depending on their learning style, could
complete the same activity through a visual task or a drawing task instead
of the more hands on activity that is explained. Knowing the students
learning needs will make it easy to identify if students need an alternative
option.

Assessment Strategies
What are the assessment
strategies used throughout
this lesson? These should be
closely aligned to your
lesson aims. How you will
you record student learning
outcomes?

Lesson Planner

o Bring all students together and ask questions that could erase the
misconceptions that the students may have. E.g What is larger? 2/16 or
1/8?
o Discuss with students things that they learnt during the lesson that they
had not previously known.
o Finish off with giving the students 1 minute to draw as many
different ways as possible (compare to the first drawing they did).

o Assessment strategies for an introductory lesson could involve the

discussion at the conclusion of the lesson.
o Using mathematical language and justifying their learnt knowledge
through questioning throughout the lesson.
