Bell Schedule

Purpose
BVSD aims to change Monarch High Schools bell schedule, in hopes
to improve the average students learning experience
Our goal is to fit the new schedule to the students wants, as well as
what pediatricians and doctors are advising
This presentation is meant to inform others of the students viewpoint
of how we want our school day to be scheduled

Background informationPediatricians
are advocating
a start time
that occurs at 8:30 at the

earliest
They believe that because the majority of teenagers don't fall asleep before 10:30,
the current start times for school do not allow students to be getting appropriate
amounts of sleep

Background informationAccordingstart

sleep foundation,

later school start times would cause:
less likelihood of experiencing depressed moods
reduced likelihood for tardiness
reduced absenteeism
better grades
reduced risk of drowsy driving
reduced risk of metabolic and nutritional deficits
associated with insufficient sleep, including
obesity

The

Getting ready in the morning combined with a modest commute
means waking up roughly at 6:15am
Teenagers need 9 hours of sleep each night
Unrealistic for a 16 year old to go to bed at 9
School work, sports practices, clubs, volunteer work, and paid
employment take precedence over sleep
Impossible to get enough sleep

Background informationThe start time debate

Background informationHow
long
should
school
Currently our
school day
is 7 hours long
Does this allow time for out of school activities?
be?

Many students feel pressured for time when completing schoolwork

while juggling sports, clubs, jobs and volunteering

Background informationHow long should school

be?
Most students find that long lectures are hard
to pay attention as to learn from

So what if we changed how classes were

taught, making them more interactive
and engaging?

Block periods allow for teachers to go

more in depth with a topic, and they
can be useful when doing in class work
or taking tests

What are other schools

doing currently?-Fairview
8 classes a day
50 minute classes on
normal days
No late start nor
early release
Lunch is a period
85 minute block
periods on
wednesday and
thursday

What are other schools

doing currently?-Boulder

7 55-minute class periods

Start at 8:00
Lunch is not a period, 30 minutes long

Early release on Wednesdays

90 minute blocks on Wednesday and
Thursday

What are other schools

doing currently?-Legacy

count as one.

What is Monarchs current

schedule?

Mondays are shortened classes for

freshman seminar (50 minutes).
Freshman Seminar is 30 minutes for
just freshman.
Tuesdays and Fridays are 7 55minute class periods.
Wednesday is late start with a tutor
time in the morning(9:21).
Thursday and Wednesdays are block
days with 99(98) minute class
periods.
Lunch is 30 minutes
Announcement time is built into the
schedule

What do the students

In order to find out what
current high school students want their bell
actually
want?
schedule to look like we created a google forum
In our questionnaire we asked questions like ideal start and end times, how long they
would like for lunch, if they liked block days and left a section open to any
additional comments

We received 154 responses with many interesting and educational

opinions

Link to Responses

Data

In the survey, the majority of the

responses would like to start school
later than our current 7:30 start time

More than half of the students like

the idea of ending earlier at 3:00, so
that it doesn't interfere with after
school activities

Data

Most kids like block days and believe

that we get more work done, so we
would like to keep block days
integrated with the new schedule.

The ideal amount of time for

lunch was split quite evenly in
between the three options so we
will try to incorporate options.

Data
A little more than half of the
responses like the late start that is
held on Wednesdays. With the
new schedule it might be hard to
continue with late start but there
could be a slot for an early
release. We tried to integrate both
interests into the new bell
schedule.

Data
A lot of people responded that
they would like more block
periods so maybe more of a
block schedule throughout the
week.
Also we got a few comments
about a homeroom/seminar
that you would attend all four
years with the same teachers
and students for a small
amount of time in the morning.

Proposed bell schedule

Conclusion
In order to incorporate the needs of all students at Monarch High
School, we believe that our schedule change is vital to the performance
of students and overall success for them in the future. We hope you
take into consideration all the improvements we have made in regards
to the student body as well as the studies performed by pediatricians
leading to a better and brighter future for high schoolers.
