1870

The 1870s was a time of reformation for everyone since the country
had just come out of war (Civil War 1865). Things dealing with African
Americans were starting to change since they were no longer slaves such as
Voting rights, and rights as a citizen of the United States of America. The
world was also being revolutionized with the light bulb by Thomas Edison and
the telephone by Alexander Graham Bell. After President Abraham Lincoln
was assassinated Andrew Johnson took over and after him Ulysses S. Grant
was the president for most of the 1870s. Rutherford B. Hayes was the
president during a portion of the 1870s. The country was pretty much
politically broken during the 1870s after all they had just went through.
Many things happened in this time period good and bad. Standard Oil by John
D. Rockefeller was booming, oil was a huge gold mine at this time, because it
could be produced in large quantities. This is the decade was right after the
Civil War, and Civil Rights were given back to Confederate southerners.
Voting rights were still not given to everyone except white men many people
didnt like this so Susan B. Anthony casted a ballot in protest of voting rights
and equality for everyone. Women will not the right to vote until the
Nineteenth Amendment is passed in 1919. In 1870 the fifteenth amendment
was passed giving black Americans the right to vote. Race could no longer be
used as a reason to deny a person the right to vote. Progress was being
made because the first African American was sworn into office in the year of

1870The first economic depression happened in 1873 when the New York
stock market crashed which would continue for five years, and the country
would have another Stock Market crash on October 27, 1929 called Black
Tuesday making the country enter into the Great Depression. The Great
Depression lasted for 10 years until 1939, and the only reason we came out
of that was because of World War Two. The first commercial telephone is
exchanged during this decade. The first National Park is established. All the
national parks we have now in 2016 would not be here without the
establishment of the first one. Since men were the head of the household
they could do whatever they pleased and going to bars and drinking was a
big thing. Women did not like their husbands coming home drunk, so they
started a crusade prohibiting the sale of alcohol. Their protesting led to the
formation of the eighteenth amendment making alcohol illegal. This ban
lasted for sixteen years. Albert Einstein who is the most famous scientist in
the world is born in 1879 who would later revolutionize the world. As you can
tell the 1870s was like any other time period is had its bright moments and
its dark times. All in all, the 1870s was the best time in American History
people became more equal in rights through race, color, gender, and etc.
