Lesson Reflection and Analysis of Student Learning
December 5, 2015

During my lesson the students had lots of prior knowledge leading up to this
lesson. Unexpectedly the students Wonders lesson had a reading on rain forests and
Alaska. The students were asked to read two short stories about the rain forest habitat
and the Alaska habitat. That same day I had the students create a venn diagram
comparing and contrasting the two stories. This was a good thing that the students just
read a informational text about a habitat that I was going to introduce to them. Another
thing that went well was the way I had the activity of placing photos in the correct
habitat. I began the activity with students walking around and writing anything they knew
about each habitat, later I gathered all the students to read the things listed in the
habitats so they gain a better understanding of each habitat and asked if there were
anything that needed to be added. After the students did a walk through with me looking
at each habitat I had students pick one photo that I scattered all over the ground and
place the photo in the correct habitat and grab another photo until the floor is cleared.
The students all worked together to place the plants/animal in the correct habitat.

Something I would change is requiring each student to write something in each

habitat. Not all students participated in the activity and would like if everyone put their
input. I would also find a better video clip to show the students, some of the habitats that
were listed in the video werent habitats that I was going over. I would also spend the
time printing out color photos for the students and laminating the photos so that theyre
more pleasing to the students eyes and easier to depict what the plant/animal is.
Majority of my students were on target and able to understand the four habitat
introduced to them and get a basic background information on each habitat. The few
students that were almost there were the students who struggled only with not knowing
what the plant/animal was, but were assisted by their peers or myself to guide them to
place them in the correct habitat. Listing descriptions under each habitat was more
difficult for the students, but still a majority of the students were able to recall and write
down correct information under the habitat. The one that needed work is the student
who didnt participate with writing down any information. I feel that the students did really
well understanding the concept since they got a lot of background information prior to
the lesson and during the lesson. The process of inquiry was okay, I felt that although
each of five Es werent as defined for the students to understand what they are doing in
each process. I hope that next time I can go through each of the 5 Es so that each
student understands the process of inquiry before going through the science lesson.

The students showed evidence of their understanding and use of academic

language helped deepen their understanding of the concept. They were able to use the
language throughout the lesson as I taught them key vocabulary terms that they would
be using throughout the activities. When writing down descriptions under the habitats
the students used vocabulary that they learned and when discussing as a group
students were able to use proper academic languages to explain what was present in
the habitat.
After this lesson I will continue teaching the students about habitats but more into
detail by focusing on two habitats and have the students compare the two habitats. I will
deepen my students understanding in each habitat being taught like deserts and arctic.
The whole class will create their own inquiry and wonderings from the subject. They can
create their own research and find more background information.
