ROLE OF TECHNOLOGY FROM

TRADITIONAL AND CONSTRUCTIVIST
POINT OF VIEW
From the traditional point of view,
technology serves as source and
presenter of knowledge
From the constructivist point of view,
educational technology serves as
learning tools that learners learn with.

The following are roles of

technology in learning:
1. Technology as tools support
knowledge construction: for
representing learners ideas,
understanding and beliefs

2. Technology as information
vehicles for exploring knowledge
to support learning- byconstructing:

3. Technology as context to support

learning by doing
4. Technology as a social medium to
support learning by conversing
5. Technology as intellectual
partner

TECHNOLOGY IS A BANE WHEN

In education, technology is a bane when:
The learner is made to accept as gospel
truth information they get from the
Internet

The learner surfs the internet for

pornography

The learner has an uncritical mind on

images floating on televisions and
computers that represent
modernity and progress
The TV makes the learner a mere
spectator not an active participant
in the drama of life

The learner gets glued to his

computer for computer-assisted
instruction unmindful of the world
and so fails to develop the ability
to relate to others

We make use of the internet to do

character assassination of people whom
we hardly like
Because of the cell phone we spend most
of our time texting
We use overuse and abuse TV or film
viewing to kill time.

PHIL LANGE NAMED SIX WAYS THAT STUDENT-LEARNERS IN SCHOOL ARE

TREATED MECHANICALLY.

We turn them on and off whenever it suits our

fancy.
No explanation is offered on why and what they
do.
Their plans and future are unheard.
All work and no play.
Their human worth is judged only by the quality of
their products.
Human empathy is absent (There is no feeling
sorry for failures and limitations).

Meanwhile, the teachercommunicator can introduce

humanism by:
Interaction between
communicators/ teacher and
listener/ student.
Self evaluation or reflection by
listener/ student.
Dialogue or interchange between
communicator and listener.
Regular meeting and consultations.
