PART FIVE: GOALS

1. Teaching
Review of Goals from the Previous Year

Integrate laboratory and assessment room: I will look to improve

my teaching by integrating the Human Performance Laboratory and
Assessment Room resources into each course I facilitate via formal
hands-on laboratory activities and more informal equipment intensive
instruction.
o Complete and ongoing: The Carolina Chiropractic Plus
Human Performance Laboratory housed every Exercise
Science course taught in the 2013-2014 academic year. Sharing
teaching space within a traditional laboratory space facilitated
the implementation of multiple hands-on experiences within
the curriculum. One of the highlights of the EXSI major, as
reported by EXSI students during their exit interview, is the
multiple opportunities for hands-on experiences afforded by
the lab/classroom design. The Health-Related Physical Fitness
Assessment Rooms are a vital component of both the EXSI 310
and EXSI 410 curriculum, with students enrolled in these
courses granted access to the spaces whenever the Bost
Physical Development Complex is open.

Goals for the Coming Year

Develop collaborative and formal relationships with GWUs

Strength and Conditioning staff: I will look to improve my teaching
and increase my students exposure to hands-on learning activities by
reaching out and across disciplines to existing professionals on campus
who can compliment our EXSI curriculum. The current strength and
condition staff and facility present excellent opportunities for student
engagement and learning.

2. Professional
Review of Goals from the Previous Year

Publish and Present: Submit original research report for publication

in a peer reviewed journal and submit poster for presentation at
regional academic conference.
o Partially completed: A poster presentation was accepted at the
Southeastern Regional American College of Sports Medicine
that was co-authored with an undergraduate student and
recognized as an award winning research project and poster. A
research report was not submitted for publication.

Hartman, Jeffrey 2013-2014 Self-Evaluation

Goals for the Coming Year

Conduct Original Research: Work with an undergraduate EXSI

student to design and complete an original research project studying
prehension (i.e., pencil grasp differences and writing).

3. Service
Review of Goals from the Previous Year

School Service
o Continue to adjust the exercise science curriculum to meet
current academic and industry standards, including but not
limited to:
Exercise science program accreditation
Modification of EXSI 406 from a 3-credit to a 4-credit
lab based course.
o Partially completed: EXSI 406 was established as a 4-credit
lab based course. In addition, EXSI 347: Physiology of Sport
and Exercise and EXSI 320: Exercise and Sport Psychology
were created to supplement the EXSI curriculum.
Administration has failed to support program accreditation at
this time.

University Service
o Worksite Wellness Program: Work with administration to
implement a worksite wellness program that utilizes the
resources, both physical and intellectual, provided by the
exercise science program, including but not limited the Human
Performance Laboratory, Assessment Rooms, faculty, staff,
and students.
o Incomplete: Administration failed to support a worksite
wellness program at this time.

Goals for the Coming Year

School and University Service: Work with regional community

colleges that offer accredited Physical (PTA) and/or Occupational
Therapy Assistant (OTA) programs of study in attempts to establish
articulation agreements for EXSI graduates interested in pursing
careers in PTA or OTA.
