Dear GWU Promotion and Tenure Committee:
Lam writing to support Dr. Jeff Hartman in his application for promotion, T have known Dr.
Hartman for ten years, both asa student, and most recently, a colleague.
As the former assistant volleyball coach at Gardner-Webb University (2011-16), | oversaw
our recruiting efforts and was in charge of setting up all of our on-campus visits. It was
important to our staff to include the opportunity to attend a class and personally meet with
professor in the prospective student athlete's desired major during her visit to campus.
‘With the growing interest in the Exercise Science field, I sent.a lot of recruits to meet with
Dr. Hartman and attend his classes. If particular prospect was not sure what she wanted
to major in, I still would send her to his class, as | know that the atmosphere in his
classroom is one that is positive, fun, and educational, Dr. Hartman always agreed to meet
with our prospective student athletes, whether the visit occurred during regular office
hours or not. I could always count on him.
From a personal standpoint, can also speak to Dr. Hartman's passion for health, fitness,
and building community within the GWU family. Within my first year as an employee at
Gardner-Webb, | joined the GWU Purposeful Runners group, which was started and is led by
Dr, Hartman, The Purposeful Runners not only raise money for the Dr. Hunt Scholarship,
but the group also provides an opportunity for GWU employees to improve their fitness
among supportive and welcoming friends. Some of my fondest memories of my time at
GWU occurred at am on Saturday mornings during our group runs, an event I looked
forward to each week. The group truly helped me grow physically, emotionally, and
spiritually and I am thankful that I got to be a part of such a wonderful community.
I cannot say enough about Dr. Hartman's commitment to his students (several of my former
players were studying Exercise Science), his enthusiasm when working with our
Prospective student athletes, his passion for health and fitness, and his contribution to the
GWU family by founding the GWU Purposeful Rumners group. Gardner-Webb University
will always be very near and dear to my heart, and itis people like Dr. Jeff Hartman who
helped it have such an impact on my life.
Sincerely,
Bethany Martin
