ofnationalsecuritybecausemanycometotheU.S.tolivebetterlivesandexperiencewhat
freedomfeelslike.TheUnitedStateshasbeenfightingforfreedomforaslongasmanyofus
remember,butwiththeExecutiveOrder9066itgavetheU.S.abadreputationbecauseallthat
freedomtheyhadworkedforwasstrippedawayfrommanyofitsowncitizensbecauseoftheir
race.Freedomshouldhavecertainrestrictionsonitforotherssafetybutnottothepointwhere
U.S.citizensoranyoneisbeingheldininternmentwhileintheUnitedStates.Wedeniedbasic
rightstoAmericancitizensrightsthateveryonewholivesintheU.S.shouldbeabletohaveno
matterwhat.

TheUnitedStatesisknownforfightingforfreedom.TheExecutiveOrder9066prettymuch
gavetheUnitedStatesabadreputationbecauseallthatfreedomthatwasworkedforwas
takenawayfrommanyoftheUnitedStatesowncitizensbecauseoftheirraceinsourceAL4it
states,Extraordinarysacrificesoccurintimesofnationalcrisis,andwerecognizethat
thousandsofAmericanslosttheirlivesinthatconflict.Thewarexactedapricethatcannever
berepaid.Whattheyfoughtfor,whattheyfoughtanddiedfor,wasaNationthatrespectsbasic
freedoms,justiceandrights.Theirsacrificeistheveryreasonwehavetheresponsibilityof
comingtotermswiththistragicmomentofourhistory.Thatisthelessonweallmustlearn.The
U.S.hadjusttakenthefreedomofsomanypeopleandactedliketheywerenothinglikethey
werentevenpartofthecountry.SomeJapaneseAmericansprobablyneverhavebeento
Japan,andtoputthemincampsjusttobeonthesafesidewaswrong.

Thereshouldbecertainandlimitedrestrictionsonfreedom.Ionlysaythisforthewellbeingof
othercitizens.WhenIsaycertainrestrictionsthatsnotpullingapersonawayfromtheirhome
andholdingthemcaptiveinacampjustbecauseofhowtheylook.InSourceAfromlesson4it
hadsaidthat,Mr.Speaker,thisbillprovesourrespectforhumanrightsandlibertiesis
paramount.Thisbillalsoestablishesahistoricalprecedentthatthiswillneverhappenagainto
anyracial,religious,ethnicgrouporindividualthatthosefolkswillbedeprivedofdueprocess
becauseoftheirbackground.TheUnitedStatesactionswerentjustified.Wetookinnocent
peoplefromtheirhomesandforcedthemintoprison.No,notprison,Concentrationcamps.Just
becausesomeleaderswereparanoid?Ifyou'regoingtoruinnotoneperson,notonefamily,but
anentireraceyouneedabetterexcuse!Whatifsomethinghappenedandyourcountrydecided
yourracewas'bad'?

Manyhadbeendeniedtheirrightsbecauseofwhotheyareaspeople.Notlikethosepeople
chosewhotheywantedtobe.TheConstitutionregardsdiscriminationasunacceptableand
immoral.TheStatestookallJapaneseasiftheywereapartofthewarandcontributinginsome
waytohelptheJapanese,eveniftheyhadalreadybeensworninascitizens.Thesecamps
deniedthesocialrightsoftheJapanesebykeepingthemfromallsocietyinitself,profilingthem,
andkeepingthemcontainedlikeanimals.Thesecampswereprimeexamplesofdiscrimination,
whichisstatedintheConstitutionaswrong.IntheKorematsucaseitshowsexactlythat,The
1942Act[ExecutiveOrder9066]wasattackedintheHirabayashicaseasanunconstitutional
delegationofpoweritwascontendedthatthecurfeworderandotherordersonwhichitrested
werebeyondthewarpowersoftheCongress,themilitaryauthorities,andofthePresident,as
CommanderinChiefoftheArmy,and,finally,thattoapplythecurfeworderagainstnonebut
citizensofJapaneseancestryamountedtoaconstitutionallyprohibiteddiscriminationsolelyon
accountofrace.

Manywillsaythatfreedomshouldbesacrificedinthenameofnationalsecuritymostlyfor
otherssafety.ManywouldarguebysayingintimesofneedtheUnitedStateswouldhavetodo
horriblethingsjusttoprotecttheU.S.anditscitizens.InsourceAlesson4Mr.Coblesays,I
can,however,argue,Mr.Speaker,thatinatimeofwarwhenacountryisthreatenedforitsvery
survival,asthiscountrywasafterPearlHarborin1942,manythingshappenandmanylivesare
disruptedfornologicalreason.Manytravestiesofjusticeoccurduringatimeofwar.Somealso
havesaidthattheJapanesecouldmoveinland,yetmostchosenottoo.TheAmericanshadno
knowledgeofwhetherornottheJapanesecitizenswereactuallyspiesornot.

Isaythatweshouldntgiveupourfreedomfornationalsecurity.Freedomissomethingmany
haveworkedhardtoearnandstrippingthatawayfromsomeoneisnttheanswer.Governments
shouldhavetheirownplanssetupwithouttakingaperson'srightsandfreedomaway.Mostly
becausetoomanyfreedomistheonlythingtheystillhave.
