Making 10 student booklet
As a class fill out the first two pages of the student booklet,
explaining that they will use the ten frames to find all the
different ways we can create ten
After working through examples have students fill out the
remainder of their book independently
Students who finish early can complete the addition
coloring worksheet
Once students have completed the booklet have them clean
their desks and move to the carpet
- Observations
- Additional time when needed
- Working in small groups
- Additional support when needed
Head to carpet and introduce the two making ten games to
students
After explaining the games break students into 2 equal
groups and instruct them to get into partners. Assign the
groups to one of the two games
Students will have ten minutes to play a game before
switching to the other game
Capture 4 Making 10
Students will alternate using the spinner, and determine
what would have to be added to the number shown in the
ten frame in order make ten
Students will then cover a space with the corresponding
number
Student will try to work towards getting 4 bingo chips in a
row, while also trying to block their partner from getting 4
chips in a row
If there are no available spaces for the number that has
been spun, the player will lose his/her turn
The first player to get 4 in a row wins

What makes 10 Teddy bear surprise

Each pair of students will be given 10 teddy bears and a
bowl
Students will take turns select a number of teddy bears to
places under the bowl without letting their partner see
Adapted from a template created by Dr. K. Roscoe

Lesson Plan Template ED 3501 (Version C)

The other student will have to count how many teddy bears
are left uncovered and use what they know about the
different ways we can make 10 to determine how many
teddy bears are hiding under the bowl
Students will have 1 minute to come up with an answer
Student will take turns hiding the teddy bears, and guessing
the amount that remain under the bowl

Around 12:50 have students start to clean up centers and

line up for lunch.
- Observations
- Additional time when needed
- Working in small groups
- Additional support when needed
Closure
Students learning will be assessed through observation,
participation and completion of student booklet
Have students recall the different ways we can make ten and how
this can help us with addition and subtraction.
Tell students that we will review the strategies we learned today in
tomorrows class, and look further into how the friends of 10 can
help us with subtraction.
