surfaceareacalculatedthendividedintotheloadapplied.AswiththeBrinelltestthe
diagonalmeasurementisconvertedtoahardnessfigurebyreferringtoasetoftables.
ThehardnessmaybereportedasVickersHardnessnumber(VHN),Diamond
PyramidNumber(DPN)or,mostcommonly,Hvxxwhere'xx'representstheloadused
duringthetest.

Asmentionedearlier,theVickersindentationissmallerthantheBrinellimpression
andthusfarsmallerareascanbetested,makingitpossibletocarryoutasurvey

acrossaweldedjoint,includingindividualrunsandtheheataffectedzones.Thesmall
impressionalsomeansthatthesurfacemustbeflatandperpendiculartotheindentor
andshouldhaveabetterthan300gritfinish.
ErrorsinHardnessTesting
Therearemanyfactorsthatcanaffecttheaccuracyofthehardnesstest.Someofthese
suchasflatnessandsurfacefinishhavealreadybeenmentionedabovebutitisworth
reemphasisingthepointthatflatnessismostimportantamaximumangleof
approximately1wouldberegardedasacceptable.

Toachievetherequiredflatnesstoleranceandsurfacefinishsurfacegrindingor
machiningmaybenecessary.Thecorrectloadmustbeappliedandtoachievethis
theremustbenofrictionintheloadingsystemotherwisetheimpressionwillbe
smallerthanexpectedregularmaintenanceandcalibrationofthemachineis
thereforeessential.TheconditionoftheindentoriscrucialwhilsttheVickers
diamondisunlikelytodeterioratewithuseunlessitisdamagedorloosenedinits
mountingbyclumsyhandling,theBrinellballwilldeformoveraperiodoftimeand
inaccuratereadingswillresult.Thisdeteriorationwillbeacceleratedifalarge
proportionoftheworkisonhardmaterials.Thelengthoftimethattheloadisapplied
isimportantandmustbecontrolled.
Thespecimendimensionsareimportantifthetestpieceistoothinthehardnessof
thespecimentablewillaffecttheresult.Asaruleofthumbthespecimenthickness
shouldbetentimesthedepthoftheimpressionfortheBrinelltestandtwicethatof
theVickersdiagonal.Similarly,iftheimpressionistooclosetothespecimenedge
thenlowhardnessvalueswillberecordedagainasaruletheimpressionshouldbe
some4to5timestheimpressiondiameterfromanyfreeedge.Performinghardness
testingoncylindricalsurfacesegpipesandtubes,theradiusofcurvaturewillaffect
theindentationshapeandcanleadtoerrors.Itmaybenecessarytoapplyacorrection
factorthisiscoveredinanISOspecification,ISO6507Part1.

Thespecimentableshouldberigidlysupportedandmustbeingoodconditionburrs
orraisededgesbeneaththesamplewillgivelowreadings.Impactloadingmustbe
avoided.Itisveryeasytoforcetheindentorintothespecimensurfacewhenraising
thetableintoposition.Thiscanstraintheequipmentanddamagetheindentor.
Operatortrainingiscrucialandregularvalidationorcalibrationisessentialif
hardnessrestresultsaretobeaccurateandreproducible.
