Different Types of

Observation

Guidelines

The guidelines to observing children are you gather information about their
surroundings and them as kids
Examples are like observing their coats, books, playgrounds and in
classrooms and confidentiality

Anecdotal Record

Anecdotal record is the simplest form of direct observation is a brief narrative


account of a specific incident.

An example is: being in a accident will cause you to have to do this

Checklist

Checklist are designed to record the presence or absence of specific traits or


behaviors
An example is: In order to know who is in class you would need a checklist to
put whos here and whos not

Rating Scale

Rating scales are used to record the degree to which a quality or trait is
present
An example is: Taking a school survey

Participation Chart

A participation chart can be developed to gain information on specific aspects


of childrens behavior
An example is like during class to show what a student does in class

Portfolio

A portfolio is a collection of materials that shows a persons abilities,


accomplishments, and progress over time
An example is like how im gonna do at the end of my senior year which is to
keep all my memories in and any photos
