Overstimulation

Some children become overstimulated by being around a larger group of

children
Having too many activities planned or program changes like holidays
Limit the number of children in one area

Breaks in Routine

This is changes in the daily schedule.

Example

If a child usually naps at 12:30 everyday, and this is not followed through, this could cause the
child to be overtired.

The change in a schedule can cause a child to be confused, frustrated, and

lead to acting out in behavior.

Noise

What is it?- a sound, especially one that is loud or unpleasant or that causes
disturbance.
Example of when this happens?- children will cover their ears when a smoke
alarm goes off or when an ambulance drives by with the siren on some
children will cringe.
What can happen as a result of this cause?- the children may raise their voice
or yell, the result will be chaos.

Waiting Time

What is it?-a waiting time is when you have to wait a certain period of time, it
could be for a short or long period of time.
Example of when this happens?-if they have to wait for a story for a long time
they could start hitting and pushing.
What can happen as a result of this cause?-if the children are actively
involved in self-selected activities, it will reduce waiting time and resulting
behavior problems.

Frustration

This is a feeling of being out of control, defeated, or discouraged.

Example

If a child is playing with a toy that they cant figure out because the age range is not
appropriate, they will feel discouraged and upset.

This can cause anger which may cause the child to hit, punch, push, kick, or
bite.

Physical Problems

Medication can affect a childs behavior too

Ignoring all directions and suggestions, high anxiety level
Overly active or tense due to other health problems
A child under pain due to dental or medical care may act inappropriately
Encourage the child to do activities, focus on the childs needs, and involve
them in appealing activities
