World War I is now over. The killing had
stopped.
The terms of peace still had to be worked
out.
On January 18, 1919, a conference to
establish those terms began.

Britain and France showed little sign of

war-making power.

negotiate the Treaty: Lloyd George of
Britain, Orlando of Italy, Clemenceau of
France, and Woodrow Wilson of the U.S.

Treaty of Versailles
The Treaty of Versailles was signed on June
28, 1919, five years to the day after Franz
Ferdinands assassination.
The Treaty punished Germany and created
the League of Nations.
The league was to be an international
organization whose goal was to keep peace.

Germanys punishment
had to take full responsibility for the war.
had to pay for all the war damage (reparations).
army was reduced to 100,000 men and could not
grow past this amount.
no air force, tanks, war ships or poison gas
was to lose territory on all sides, & split in two by
new nation of Poland.
lose all her colonies.
had to pay for all the war repairs in other countries.
