Sense of Touch
What concepts or developmental skills will this lesson address?

Brief description of the

lesson
This lesson is:

Rationale

Learn and Explore Preschool 330 Neptune Avenue Brooklyn, NY 11235

Age 4-5/Pre-K
Ms. Alana
Classroom Number

Physical Development and Health: Children will use their hands to

explore and gain a better understanding of the concept of the sense of
touch, as well as what people can learn about objects simply by
touching them.
This lesson will focus childrens attention on their sense of touch.
Without looking, they will explore a mystery bag and use descriptive
vocabulary to describe the things that they touch and feel.
A new concept/activity A continuation of a previous lesson/activity
A review of a previous A conclusion of a concept
lesson/activity
Why is there a need for this lesson?
Our five senses are very important and help us to understand ourselves
and the world around us. This includes people, places, and things. More
specifically, our hands help us to hold, touch, and feel things. By using
our hands, we are able to learn about objects and we can determine if
something is hot, cold, hard, soft, wet, dry, etc. Some people cannot

see, and therefore, they greatly rely on their other senses, especially
their sense of touch.
Keep in mind appropriate length of an activity for preschool-aged children is 20
mins at most, no more than 45 mins for children K-2 grade)
20 minutes
What will children know, or demonstrate as a result of this learning experience?
- Students will understand that we most commonly use our hands to
touch and feel.
- Students will use their sense of touch to explore different textures.
- Students will be able to describe different textures using appropriate
adjectives.
Which NYS Early Learning, or Common Core Standards are addressed? Are there
other standards used?
PK.AL.4. Exhibits curiosity, interest, and willingness in learning new
things and having new experiences.
PK. PDH.1. Uses senses to assist and guide learning.
PK. CKW.1 (Science). Asks questions and makes predictions based on
observations and manipulations of things and events in the
environment.
PK.CKW.2. (Science). Tests predictions through exploration and
experimentation.
What language/vocabulary, communication, or literacy skill(s) do I want my
students to develop in this lesson? For edTPA consider this: Which academic
language demands am I targeting? Choose one, including language functions,
vocabulary, syntax, or discourse that is central to this learning segment. How is
this activity using the specific language demand?

Learning Activity Plan for PreK-Grade 2

For this lesson, we will be focusing primarily on building more descriptive

vocabulary. Children will learn new words that describe textures of common
objects. These words are hard, soft, spongy, rough, smooth, bumpy, squishy,
spiky, and cold.
Resources/materials
needed:
(Include any worksheets or
sources of evidence for
childrens learning you will
use during the activity)

Technology inclusion (if

applicable)
Procedures (step by
step)

- The Five Senses by Aliki

- Chart paper
- Tape
- Marker
- Childrens sized eye mask
- Non-transparent bag
- Two sets of various objects with different textures (i.e. rock [hard],
feather [soft], sponge [spongy], sandpaper [rough], wooden block
[smooth], gourd [bumpy], play dough [squishy], pinecone [spiky], ice
cube [cold])
- Reference pictures of alternative items with the same textures as the
objects for this activity
- Laptop
- Projector
Anticipatory Set (Connection/Motivation) What will you do to get childrens
attention, or to introduce children to this learning activity? Describe the process
in getting them interested and engaged.
I will start by reminding the children that we have been learning about
our five senses. We will review that they are sight (we see with our
eyes), smell (we smell with our nose), hearing (listening with our ears),
tasting (with our tongues), and touch (feeling with our hands). I will tell
them that today, we will be learning more about our sense of touch.

Then, I will show them the video Touch! A Five Senses Song from Mr. R's
Songs for Teaching from YouTube via the projector.
Instruction/Mini Lesson (Outline the procedures or sequence activities that will
make up this learning experience; for instance, you might follow a routine
wherein you model (I try); and ask for active involvement (we try) during a whole
group session.
- I will read the book Five Senses by Aliki.
- Afterwards, I will take out the objects of various textures and call on
individual children to come up and use their sense of touch to feel
them.
- Children will determine appropriate words to describe what the
objects feel like. We will write the words on chart paper and tape the
objects underneath the words.
Independent Practice (small group activity, working with partners, or
independently)
During Center Time, with a partner, students will take turns reaching
into a mystery bag of items with different textures that are similar to
the items they touched during the mini lesson. They will collaborate to
determine their textures, and sort the objects by taping them to the
chart paper that was used earlier.
Closure (sharing/reflection, next steps)
As a whole group, each student will name at least three of the items
they had in their mystery bag, and identify the word to describe its
texture.

(s)
(Be sure to include any
tools, rubrics/checklists
and/or worksheets you will
use for assessment(s)

Pre-assessment
Outline the steps you will
take to evaluate
students prior
knowledge.
Students will be given
a few objects with
different textures to
explore (i.e. apple,
pine cone, sandpaper,
play dough, ice cube,
etc.). One object at a
time, I will ask each
child how it feels. (i.e.
Does this apple feel
hard or soft? Does this
pinecone feel spiky or
smooth? Does this
sandpaper feel smooth
or rough? Does this
play dough feel hard
or squishy? Does this
ice cube feel hot or
cold?) I will use a
checklist to record
their answers.

Assessment of Student
Learning Outline the steps
you will take to evaluate
students learning. What
evidence will I have to
assess whether students
have successfully achieved
the content objectives?
Students will be able to
identify appropriate
adjectives to describe
the textures of objects.
They will sort them into
common categories.

Childrens Language
Learning
Outline the steps you
will take to evaluate
students language
learning. What
evidence will I have to
assess whether
students have
successfully achieved
the content objectives?
Students will go on a
classroom texture
hunt. They will
search for objects
that are hard, soft,
smooth, rough,
squishy, pointy, etc.

What modifications should I make to the activity to
ensure all students are included and engaged in all
steps required to meet the lessons objectives?
To ensure that all students are included and
engaged in all the steps that are required to
meet the lessons objectives, I will have many
picture cues with labels, and there will be a lot
of oral repetition.
