Spectrophotometry
• A spectrophotometer is employed to
measure the amount of light that a
sample absorbs. The instrument operates
by passing a beam of light through a
sample and measuring the intensity of
light reaching a detector.

Infrared Spectrophotometry
• Infrared Spectrophotometry is designed to
identify or determine the sample by measuring
absorption of infrared radiation when it passes
through the sample

Typical Apparatus used in
IR Spectrophotometry
The infrared portion of the
electromagnetic
spectrum is usually divided into three

regions:

• the near-infrared

• the mid-infrared; and

• the far- infrared

Biological Applications

• Determination of enzymatic
activity
• Diagnosis of certain diseases
