Individual Teaching Philosophy Draft 2

Teachers should provide safe and inclusive learning environments. In these

learning environments each child should feel welcomed, valued and respected as
though they are apart of a small community. As a teacher I want the children in
my classroom community to feel comfortable around me, where they are not
afraid to ask me for help or guidance as that is what I am there for.
Every child is unique with their own sets of values and experiences that they can
contribute to the classroom. I want to encourage participation and collaboration
with peers through class discussions and group activities. I want each child to act
as an active participant in their learning through sharing their prior knowledge,
experiences, perspectives, opinions and beliefs. Through sharing with their peers
and working collaboratively they will be able to make connections to prior
learning, knowledge or experiences and expand upon their current beliefs and
knowledge. Each child will also be able to socialise with one another and make
friendships within the classroom through the collaborative activities and
discussions.

I recognise that during classroom discussions it is important to
conduct guided teaching and scaffolding. This is so that I can support
and model the learning to each child so that they will be able
understand new knowledge or information and appropriate it. Where

children will be able to internalise and extend upon their current knowledge. In
doing this I will strive to work with children as a partner not just someone who
controls the learning. Through these experiences I want to ensure that everyone
is respectful of one another and that they are sensitive to differing viewpoints or
opinions, in order to create a safe classroom environment.
I believe that learning should be made meaningful and be personalised to each
individual child. Therefore in my teaching I will apply inquiry approaches where
learning is adapted to their own interests, which will allow for increased
motivation and responsibility over their own learning. Using inquiry in the helps
cater to the diversity of learners within the classroom as it is open-ended and

will allow each child to work at their own pace.

I understand that assessment is an important tool to use through out a childs
learning. Therefore I strive to incorporate different types of assessment into my
lessons that are open-ended and cater for different types of learners. I want to
ensure assessment is ongoing so that I will always have an understanding of each
childs capabilities and growth. Through doing this I will be able to modify my
classes to each childs needs.
I believe it is important for me as a teacher to reflect upon my teaching on a daily
basis. Classrooms are ever changing, so my teaching has to be flexible and I need
to make sure pedagogy is relevant. To keep up with the new and improving
classrooms, I have been working on my Technological Pedagogical Content
Knowledge, so that I can appropriately incorporate ICT into my teaching. ICT can
be a valuable and open-ended resource in the classroom that can cater to a
diverse range of student needs and benefit their learning.
