GENERAL SAFETY RULES FOR THE LABORATORY

The safe way is the right way to do your job. Plan your work. Follow instructions. If you
do not know how to do the experiment safely, ask your instructor.
1.

Be able to use all safety devices and protective equipment provided for your use and
know their location (eyewash fountain, shower, fire blanket, fire extinguisher).

2.

Safety goggles must be worn at all times.

3.

Do not eat or drink or smoke in the laboratory.

4. Do not run & act irresponsible in laboratory areas.

5. Wear proper clothing and shoes (including protective clothing when handling corrosive,
toxic, or flammable materials).

6. If you see a colleague doing something dangerous, point out him to the instructor.
7. Also know about substances which are explosive, toxic, and carcinogenic materials and
use them only with adequate safeguards.
8. Never leave a reaction or experiment running unattended.

9. Keep hood and bench top areas clean and workable space maximized.
10. Some chemicals can be washed down the drain, while others require a different method
of disposal.

There are some basic techniques to deal with particular types of hazards during
performing any practical in laboratory.

Contact Hazard
i.
If you spill a corrosive substance on your skin or clothing, wash it off with large amounts
of water.
ii.
Notify the instructor of any spillage as soon as possible.

Ingestion Hazard
i.
Never taste any chemical or thing in the laboratory.
ii.
Never drink water from a beaker.
iii.
Does not use mouth suction when filling a pipette; rather use a suction bulb.

Inhalation Hazard
Experimental operations that generate toxic or dangerous fumes should always be
performed under a fume hood.
ii.
Test for odor of chemicals only by waving your hand above the container and sniffing
from distance.

Fire Hazard
i.
Handle power leads one at a time and make sure the power is off.
ii.
Do not work with electricity in the presence of aqueous or other solutions.
iii.
Do not attempt to over-ride safety interlock devices.
