Task 1.

13- Music Video Directors Task

Anthony Mandler is an American film director, music video director, television
commercial director and photographer. He was born on the 18 th April, 1973, in
Las Angeles, California, and U.S.
As a music video director, his most notable and
frequent collaborator is Rhianna. Together, they have
worked on sixteen music videos throughout her career.
They began with Unfaithful in 2006 and more recently
they worked on Diamonds in 2012. Rhianna is just
one of the many people Mandler has collaborated with.
Other than Rhianna he has worked with artist including
Jay-Z, Beyonc, Lana Del Rey, Justin Bieber, NE-YO, Mary J. Blidge, Drake and
plenty more.
Anthony Mandler uses a cinematic approach which creates imagery that often
propels artists from being famous to iconic. He is known to have fresh, highgloss style and is a master of lighting. He receives praise for his unique style of
storytelling demonstrating his extensive and highly talented famous photography
background.
The types of artists Mandler has worked with are mainly all current and new. This
can allow him to play around a bit and experiment to help them become an
individual artist. It appears that the artists that he has worked with all produce
very similar music styles and genres, these mainly being pop, hip-hop and a little
bit of rap. Every artist out there is different, however similar they may be, music
wise or appearance, they will never be the same. I have noticed that Anthony is
conventional with each individual artist he works with though. For example, most
of Rhiannas videos that hes worked on with her have a very strong meaning
behind them and really impact the audience to feel. Whereas the videos, for
example, that he developed with other artists can be completely different.
Anthony like I previously mentioned has worked with
various talented artist over the years, anyhow one of the
artists he has worked the most with has to definitely be
Rhianna. His videos with Rhianna explore deep emotional
narratives. However videos like Russian Roulette,
Disturbia and Only Girl take more of a linear journey.
With the video Diamonds it comes across differently to most of their other work.
It doesnt follow the traditional narrative, but instead involves a series of
seemingly unrelated vignettes and in a way in paints a portrait of Rhiannas
personal life.
Anthony Mandler paired up with Lana Del Rey to create a video to match her
single Ride. They created a sprawling, cinematic 10 minute video. Lana Del Rey
said it was an epic vision of what she said America used to be. She had
previously worked with Mandler on the video National Anthem. She explained
her connection to the director and mentioned how he stayed true to her and her

own artistic visions. This shows that Anthony works well with artists and allows
them to portray and include their own ideas and visions alongside his own.
