Content

Green Chemistry is the utilization of a

set of
principles that reduces or eliminates
the use
of generations of hazardous substances
in the design, manufacture
andapplication of chemical products.
Refer to SO C4.3, C5.5.

Reference to toxicity ofcertain metals

example: Lead(Lead compounds in car
exhaust fumes,and paints, disposal
ofvehicular batteries),arsenic (for
mining),cadmium (disposal ofnickelcadmium batteries), and
mercury (disposal of thermometers in
hospitals and labs,mercury content in
fish). Problem ofdisposal of solid
waste(metals).

Pollution and role played by sulfur

dioxide, carbon monoxide, hydrogen
sulfide, oxide of
nitrogen, carbon dioxide, chlorofluoro
carbons, nitrates,phosphates,
herbicides and pesticides;

Harmful effects of metals

to living organisms.
Lead poisoning causes:
mental retardation, birth
defects, psychosis,, allergies,
dyslexia, paralysis, brain
damage, kidney damage and
may even cause death.
Arsenic poisoning causes:
cancer of lungs, liver, bladder
and skin.
Cadmium poisoning causes:
bone damage or renal
dysfunction.
Mercury poisoning causes:
Brain memory malfunctions
and changes in vision or
hearing.

Harmful effects of nonmetal compounds to

living organisms
Sulfur dioxide: Toxic gas,
decompose buildings, causes
acid rain.
Carbon monoxide: Toxic gas,
danger lies in that it is
colorless & odorless therefore
not easily detected until its
effect becomes fatal. It
replaces O2 in combining with
hemoglobin of the blood.
Hydrogen sulfide: Extremely
toxic and causes respiratory
deseases

Nitrogen dioxoxide: causes

acid rain and respiratory
deseases.
Chlorofluoro
carbons(CFCs): mainly used
as a refrigerant but causes
ozone depletion.
Nitrates:
Phosphates:
Herbicides:
