IT IS EASY TO GET LOST IN ALL THE

AVAILABLE CHOICES WHEN YOURE
MAKING A SIMCHA. A barmitzvah boy
has his sights set on making an entrance
dressed as James Bond with a shapely girl
on each arm; while a batmitzvah wants a
gown that the girls at school will talk about
for weeks to come. As for a bride and
groom, well they want what they want but
have to balance their wishes with those
proffered by their respective parents,
siblings and friends - all of whom know
better than they do. Naturally.
To simplify the process we have
gathered experts in the field of functionmaking in one place so that you can see
up-close and personal what they will
bring to your big day. Whether you are
looking for event planners, food caterers,
venues, entertainment or crazy gizmos to
make it all happen, they will all be at the

ONE MAN

HIS DRESS

Louisa Walters meets bridalwear designer Ian Stuart

magine you are in a wedding dress boutique. How do

you want to look on your special day? asks the sales
assistant. Close your eyes and think about it. Does
beautiful, theatrical, sexy, romantic, edgy and all-out
showstoppingly spectacular come to mind? If so, you
need Ian Stuart.
Ian Stuart is one of the UKs most highly regarded
bridalwear designers. He originally had dreams of
becoming a costume designer, but also wanted to
create beautiful gowns that real women could wear.
He designed his first bridalwear collection as
a young man at fashion college and then
underwent couture training at Bellville Sassoon in
London. After this, he moved to the US to design
collections for major bridal brands in New York.
Ian started his own label almost as a rebellion to
the creative constraints he felt while working in
New York. Although his designs were selling more
than he could ever have hoped, they were
extremely commercial and did not represent him
as a designer. This sapped him of his creativity and
he eventually returned to London. In 2002, together
with his partner Pete Tague, Ian launched his own
label. He vowed to design only what was in his
heart, to stick to his signature handwriting, to never
follow trends and to keep innovating.
Ians signature look is representative of women
who love and embrace their own unique style,
rather than conforming to mainstream trends. The
styles are coquettish, theatrical, sexy, naughty,
romantic and beautiful with a little bit of diva
thrown in for good measure. They feature muted
pastel colours, several different textures, frayed
edges and lavish embellishment. They are raw, edgy
and spectacular. Ian designs truly extraordinary dresses
and if someone can tell an Ian Stuart gown apart from
others, he knows he is being true to himself, his designs
and his label.
A bride should choose an Ian Stuart gown if she falls
in love with the aesthetic, he says. My gowns are my
art and, as with all art forms, beauty is in the eye of the
beholder.
Ians couture training gave him in-depth skilled
knowledge of cut and construction. The inside of
the dress is just as important as the outside, as this
is what makes a woman feel good wearing it, he
says. His expert construction gives each bride
a defined figure, making her look and feel her

most beautiful and confident self.

Ians latest collection, Runway Rebel, is just arriving in the
stores. Ever the adversary to plain and commercial, Ian is
as rebellious in his own nature as he is in his approach to
designing bridalwear. He dares to break rules and take risks
while keeping the traditional essential beauty of a wedding
gown. Runway Rebel pays homage to Ians intrinsic values
of design, as well as to the attitude of the daring modern
bride who chooses to wear his creations. Runway Rebel is
an uplifting celebration, an ode to life and the freedom to
be expressive, creative and rebellious in it. Sensuality,
passion and joy are the keywords of the collection.
Those of you who visited the recent Wedding Dresses
1775 2014 exhibition at the V&A will have had the chance
to see Ians Flower Bomb dress on display. A chance
meeting between Ians assistant and a staff member of the
V&A (at an amateur dramatics class) led to him meeting
with Edwina Ehrman, who was curating the exhibition.
Ian showed her his work, and she immediately wanted
Flower Bomb in the exhibition, recognising the
historical influences in its modern design. She said it
was a perfect fit for an exhibition that told the story of
the evolution of wedding dress design.
Ian Stuart dresses can be found in 60 stockists in
the UK, plus in his flagship store in Victoria, The
Blewcoat. This stunning space is his creative home,
where he can work closely with women to create
fully bespoke designs. For Ian, one of the most
cherished aspects of being a designer is being
able to work like this, and collaborate with his
clients to create something that is a true reflection
of their own personal style.
In 2007, in response to demand from brides who
complained that their mothers couldnt find anything
that wasnt frumpy, Ian launched Ian Stuart London,
a fabulous range of occasionwear aimed at the mother of
the bride and also guests. His concept, as he put his
pencil to paper and designed the collection was,
What will my brides be wearing when their daughters
get married? Retaining the signature look that his
brides love so dearly, the designs are innovative,
sexy and beautifully made, with corsetry inside that
makes every woman look like a knockout. Its the
antithesis of frumpy, and the epitome of fabulous.
Thats an Ian Stuart through and through.

Former fashion stylist Gayle

Gayle was shocked at the cost of these dresses
and came up with an idea that would keep
mums, daughters and bank managers happy.
RentRockReturn is a dress hire service that
enables girls to have the designer dresses they
want for just 50 to 60. This way they can have
a different dress for each party (because who
wants to wear the same dress twice anyway?)
The dresses are sparkly, colourful and fullskirted. They all have a fitted bodice and most

have a tulle underskirt. Some bodices just have

a few beads, while others are completely
covered in crystals. The stock is regularly
updated and dresses are available in sizes 2 to
14. Gayle has the zips replaced with ribbon,
which makes each dress adjustable for several
sizes. Straps can be added to any dress if
required.
Dresses are viewed and ordered online. They

MEET
THE
MOBS
(Mothers of the bar/batmitzvah)
YOU WOULD ASSUME that booking a venue, hiring a caterer and a band would be the first port of call in the
much anticipated build-up to planning a simcha, but this is not always the case. These four mothers of
the bar and batmitzvah prove that mother knows best when it comes to the dress, says Fiona Leckerman
NICKI SECKER

JANINE GREENSITE
When organising son Adams barmitzvah, Janine
Greensite admits that choosing her dress came first,
long before the Greensites even booked the venue
for their sons New Years Eve simcha. Janine had kept
a keen eye on the dresses in her favourite store
Debenhams, finally spotting the one, a fitted floor
length gown with graduating sparkling colours, I saw it
online and ordered it straight away, but I waited until the
blue cross sale, took the one I had back and rebought
it with 30 percent off. However, Janine, who lives
in Borehamwood and works for the Jewish Deaf
Association, splurged on her make-up even having four
trials. As this was Janines last child to be barmitzvahed,
she decided this was the opportunity to go all out
glamour; so with a saving here and a spree there this
mother of the barmitzvah struck the perfect balance.

It was the first dress I tried on and I simply

knew straight away it was the one, says Nicky
Secker about the subtly embellished navy
evening dress she found in a boutique in Temple
Fortune, a feat she admits she doesnt normally
achieve instantly. The hair and make-up were also
a treat and the finished result made her feel
fabulous for her daughter Francescas batmitzvah
in July. The entire event was held at the Haven in
Whetstone; the culmination of her choices that
extended from the dress to a tattoo and photo
booth as well as a DJ, made for a memorable
occasion. Nicki, a fundraiser for Camp Simcha
from Borehamwood, reminisces about the
experience of being the mother of the batmitzvah, saying: I was just kvelling the whole
evening; to have all my friends and family there sharing it with us was so special.

ELISE REUBEN

FIONA BROOKS

A week before Elise Reuben celebrated her

daughter Georgias batmitzvah, she made the risky
decision that the outfit she had planned to wear
was not right. Discarding the dress she had
purchased months before led to a fevered search
for a suitable replacement. I made my husband
take me to After Dark in Stanmore as I just didnt
feel like the batmitzvah mummy in the dress I had
bought, she remembers. But, as I put the [new]
dress on, I instantly felt more special, she says,
describing the exquisite gold and black cocktail
dress. Elsie, the deputy manager of Noahs Arkley
nursery, still had to buy new shoes and
re-accessorise the whole ensemble. And so with
her son Jacobs barmitzvah scheduled for 2017, Elise jokes: I certainly wont be buying
a dress in the last week ever again. But thats what she says now!

Fiona Brooks transformed into a dazzling Bond girl for her

son Davids 007-themed simcha held at the Elstree Film
Studios. The barmitzvah, complete with props from Star
Wars to the actual Big Brother diary room chair, was all the
brainchild of a business development manager Fiona, who
poured her heart into the function, creating the table
displays herself using clapper boards. I had a vision of what
I wanted to create and was just so excited, I loved it and
David was completely blown away. Having taken him to
the Kotel in Israel, the party was a real celebration. David
had been a poorly boy with an early diagnosis of verbal
dyspraxia, so she says that hearing him recite his barmitzvah
was something we had always dreamt of and it was the
best night of our lives. Fiona, who found her metallic
geometric print dress online and ordered it from America, will
use her creativity next year for daughter Sadies batmitzvah.

A SUITABLE SUIT
AFTER 16 YEARS of working in the hotel
and hospitality industry, Gareth-paul de
Affeot Marston Newman is not only a man
with an impressive moniker, but has seen
enough suits to know a special one when
he sees it. After a friend had bought a
Vivienne Westwood blazer and lamented
that, as it was a limited edition, he had
never been able to find another quite like
it, Gareth launched KG Bespoke in 2012
to create his own. Its motto is High quality
should not come at a high price and aims
to bring the sartorial elegance of Savile
Row out of the showroom and into your
living room.
I too wanted something similar [to
the blazer], but not an exact copy and so

I offered to make him one and incorporate

any changes he might want and that is how
we started, explains Gareth. For many
people, having a bespoke suit made for
them seems like an inaccessible dream. But
why should that be? Gareth couldnt find
an answer, and so he sought to fix it himself.
While off-the-peg suits have improved
over the years, you are limited to the designs
presented to you, which often then have to
be taken in at the waist or leg. The benefit of
bespoke is that you are not limited to
wearing the same as everyone else, in a size
closest to your own, but a unique creation
which fits and sits perfectly, he explains.
What all our clients have in common is
the professional and personal service they

receive, says Gareth. That is what we wish

to bring to the important occasions, which
mark a new chapter in life. We also offer
appointments at times that are convenient
for the buyer and will travel to them, so that
they are in control and comfortable.
The company has bespoke two-piece
suits starting from 375 and three-piece
suits from 475, which is great news for
grooms who want more than an off-the-peg
tuxedo or barmitzvah boys keen to make an
entrance in a stand-out suit.
With a selection of more than 500 suit
fabrics, 200 shirt fabrics and 100 silks, KG
Bespoke will create a perfect suit from what
you design, at a place of your choosing. This
has to be worth considering for any groom
on the go or a barmitzvah who hates
shopping, so keep a note of the contact

MUSINGS OF A

BRIDE-TO-BE
Odette Berg shares her thoughts
ITS THREE WEEKS, THREE days and six hours
until I become a bride. Not that Im counting.
Now that everything well almost everything
is in place, I can reflect on my bridal journey. At the
beginning of our engagement, well over a year
ago, I couldnt wait to get stuck into planning our
wedding. So much so that despite firmly agreeing
with my family not to rush to make plans only a few
days after I said yes we had a date, venue and
band on hold. Who were we kidding? Im organised
in most aspects of my life; this experience clearly
wasn't to be an exception.
The next task was undoubtedly the most exciting,
and arguably the most important: The Dress. Most
people dont believe that I chose it within a week of
getting engaged, but it really just fell into place.
I was on holiday in Israel with my mum and decided
to visit Galia Lahav, one of the countrys most
renowned wedding dress designers and in her shop
was a dress named Odette. Serendipitous indeed
and in typical Jewish-mum fashion, my mum barged
in and proclaimed to Galia herself: Im here to buy
the Odette dress for my daughter Odette. Yet
despite the exquisite beauty of Odette, I was won
over by another, equally perfect, dress. It sounds a
clich, but you do just know when you have the
right dress. Its truly one-of-a-kind and going back
to Israel twice this year for fittings didnt hurt either,

nor did sharing the experience with my mum.

Luckily, with time and amazingly accommodating
families, Ben and I were able to piece together the
rest of our dream day. As with most brides, Im also
fortunate enough to have plenty of friends also
getting hitched, so we have shared stories of florists
and hair styles like characters in a sugary chick flick.
But as a perfectionist, Id be lying if I said I havent
lay awake at night worrying about everything from
whether my dress will be a hit to my make-up staying
in place during the roller coaster of emotions that occur
during a wedding ceremony. Im a mess at other
peoples weddings what will I be like at my own?
Keeping everyone happy, balancing their
requirements and ensuring that they feel involved
has been a challenge at times. Even though most
people say your wedding day is solely about you
and the groom, I dont believe this is true.
Both Ben and I have incredible families and we
wanted to make sure they were totally on board
with every decision. Ive definitely learnt to
compromise along the way.
Now, as months have become weeks, and weeks
become days, an odd sense of calm has set in.
With little left to organise, Ive been reflecting on the
ceremony itself and what it symbolises. Its not just
about the wedding; its about the beginning of the
next chapter of my life with Ben. And I cant wait.

FUNCTION FANTASTIC
Annie Hall has the best contacts for looking your best

LOOKING SENSATIONAL for a simcha isnt just a wish,

its essential. Whether you are the bride or mother of the
bride/groom/bat/barmitzvah or just a guest, there is unspoken
pressure to look the business for a big day that continues on
in to the night. Getting it right depends on how early you start
working on your hair, body and skin to get it into shape and,
after years of writing about beauty products and treatments,
I am able to recommend some of the
best people for the job.

FOR FACIALS and body wraps, there is no one better

than Cetuems Andria Vassiliou, who does treatments
in Southgate and Harley Street. Amanda Holden is a
fan and with good reason, as the SCR Gold Collagen
Rejuvenation Facial (95) purifies and hydrates the skin
and the collagen plumps out fine lines and lessens
deeper ones. It is the best facial in town and you can
combine it with a seaweed body wrap. Cetuem
products are also good for those who suffer with
acne or breakouts, which can blight a brides big day.
Call Andria on 020 8368 0008.

FOR LASHES that have taken the beauty world

by storm, Kim Balaskas is the expert as she does
LVL Enhance lashes. Instead of bothering with
time-consuming extensions, this treatment
straightens your natural lashes at the root to create
the appearance of longer, thicker lashes. The
added lash tint creates a mascara-style effect, so
your lashes are perfect from the moment you wake
up, which is great for honeymoons. A must for any
bride who doesnt want to worry about blinking
back the tears. Call Kim on 07894 828084.

FOR NON-INVASIVE PROCEDURES that will make a big difference to those with
wrinkles and lines, Harley Streets Deborah Forsyth is a wizard. Deborah can administer
Botox that doesnt send your eyebrows skyward and perform thread facelifts that stimulate
collagen and make skin tauter. I looked better instantly. She now does thread treatments
on arms with loose skin and
around the dcolletage. If
you plan to reveal either, the
treatment is a must. Call
Deborah on 01564 777839
theres a 15% discount for
Jewish News readers.

If you still want to go that bit longer lashwise, Ardell makes lovely natural-looking
lashes that are knotted and feathered by
hand so they look real (5.49 from Boots,
Superdrug and Tesco). KISS USA (from 4.99
from Boots) does various ranges, from Looks
So Natural, which are light and soft, to the
True Volume, which are full but they all
blend seamlessly with your natural lashes
as, unusually, they have tapered ends.

A quick word about fragrance,

which should be unique for your
big day and for a bride Liz Earle
Botanical Essence No.20 (49 at
www.qvcuk.com) is just the right
mix of not too sweet but truly
feminine. Rose water, pink pepper,
vanilla bean and amyris blend into
a perfume that will linger in the
air and subtly to your dress. For
hostesses who want to make a
florid statement, choose Joan
Collins I Am Woman (47.50,
qvcuk.com)

I also recommend using serums that boost

your lashes and there are two excellent ones
M2 BEAUT (125, m2beaute.com and
Harrods), which contains highly effective MDN*
complex that spurs real and visible growth in
your lashes and
RapidLash, which
should be used eight
weeks before the big
day to add 50% length
and 75% more volume (41 at
Boots, LookFantastic.com and
onestopbeauty.co.uk).

For mascara, which I am

addicted to testing, I dont
think you can beat Perricone
MD No Mascara Masacara
(25, perriconemd.co.uk)
because it goes on like a
dream and doesnt smudge or
clot thanks to the precision of
the root to tip brush. Theres
also Mary Kay Lash Love
Mascara (16, marykay.co.uk),
which gives volume
flawlessly. Both are great.

IN A CHARMING BLUE SHED AT the bottom

of her Belsize Park garden, Rosie Olivia is hard
at work. Surrounded by shelves filled with blocks
that provide the shapes for her beautiful
creations, the Liverpudlian milliner had no choice
but to leave her beloved city and move to the
capital because she has never been so busy.
A Rosie Olivia label in ones hat makes a
statement, implies good taste and puts one in the
company of royalty as Rosie has become a firm
favourite with Zara Phillips daughter of the
Princess Royal Princess Beatrice and Pippa
Middleton. Just the sort of women you would
want modelling your hats if you want to dress the
cognoscenti at Ascot and Rosie now does along
with every woman of taste going to a wedding.
Enthusiastic thank you notes are pinned to a
notice board in the salon in her apartment where
clients get to try on hats made of unusual fabrics
with delicate trimmings. Some look as delicious
as ice creams, others like the headpieces from
a fabulous period movie. For a woman who is
partial to a hat for any occasion, it is pure heaven,
yet Rosie remains incredibly down-to-earth and
refuses to pursue celebrities to don her creations.
I want them to want to wear my hats, she says
matter-of-factly, as she shows me the lace-adorned
combs and beaded headbands she has made for
brides. My clients love the fact that my hats are
handmade. Many come with their outfits so we can
match the cloth and style, but the most wonderful
client for me is the one who starts with a hat and
then looks for something to wear with it.
Rosie has collaborated with designer Paul
Costelloe and although she has toyed with the
idea of exhibiting at London Fashion Week, a lot
of what she sees on the catwalk isnt wearable
in her opinion. And hats have to be wearable,
she insists. Coming to see me for a bespoke hat
is like coming to see a good friend, as I am very
blunt about telling people what suits them. I will
only ever send someone out in something that
truly works for them, as it is an advertisement for
my brand.
Rosie set up her bespoke couture hat business
after doing internships with Philip Treacy and
Stephen Jones and, although she would love
Princess Kate to don her designs, she derives

enormous pleasure dressing all her clients. She

also pays great attention to comfort for the
wearer and small pillbox-style hats are fitted with
a clear elastic that sits under all your hair and
behind your ears, so it is never troublesome.
I can do very big hats, too, though, she adds,
pulling something suitably large and dressed in
feathers from a cupboard and it is almost
impossible to resist trying it on. I love what I do
for bespoke because I am always making a hat for
a special occasion and it is wonderful to indirectly
be part of such a joyful event, she says.
And on the subject of special occasions, Rosies
relatives are already forming an orderly queue for
appointments, as the milliner herself is getting
married next spring.
They will have to get their orders in early as
I dont intend to be making hats for my wedding
at the eleventh hour, chuckles Rosie, who will be
having her Jewish wedding in Liverpool. Thats
where a lot of my family and friends are, so it feels
right and I love the city.
It will be easy to spot the wedding party as they
will be modelling Rosie originals, although the
girl who never leaves home without a trilby is
going down the traditional route for her big day.
Mazeltov Rosie and hats off to you.

EN ROSE
Deborah Cicurel said Je Fais
in Paris... and loved every minute

WHETHER YOU'VE ALWAYS DREAMED of

your wedding, or you've briefly wondered
about who you'll marry one day, chances are
that your future wedding does feature - even
if briefly in your adolescent mind.
That's why when the day comes - in a blur, a
rush of hairdressing appointments, last minute
calls to the caterers and everyone's eyes on you
- it is always over in a flash.
Of course you'll have those drooping grandmothers
telling you 'it goes so fast' and the smug brides who
got married a year before you and therefore act like
they're celebrating their golden wedding anniversary
saying nostalgically 'enjoy every moment'.
Well, obviously, you'll enjoy every moment.
That goes without saying. Everyone you love,
everyone who loves you, all in one room,
together. The joy of sharing this monumental
moment, this life-altering decision, with all your
family and friends. The moment you see your
new bride or groom - emotional, wiping away a
tear, or perhaps beaming stupidly, unsure of
what to do with all the attention - walking down
the aisle towards you, unable to believe that the
day youve been planning for so long,
painstakingly, is finally here.
All the rabbis, clapping you on the back,
blessing you for the future, all the friends,
chucking you haphazardly into the air during an
exhausting round of hora dancing, the quiet
moment during the speeches when you gasp at

your ring finger and its new addition. Its real. It

actually happened. Youre married. You dont
know whether it will ever sink in.
My own wedding, in Paris, in March, was like a
dream. So much terror beforehand - that there
would be some apocalyptic disaster such as a
Eurostar strike but my fears were swiftly
averted on the day. Despite the fact that I woke
up with a pounding headache and a high fever,
everything else was perfect. The sun kindly made
a guest appearance, Paris was devoid of strikes probably for the first time ever - and my husband
actually married me. Who knew everything could
go to plan without any of the disasters that
happen in every single wedding movie?
Everything went right: the photographers,
videographers, caterers, florists. Of course there
were a few minor hiccups, but here is all the

Have fun with your new spouse. If you didnt

SIMCHA SUPPLEMENT

WHEN IN ROME

Louisa Walters went

to a wedding in
Italy and thinks thats
the place to do it...

early a quarter of British couples are choosing to get

married abroad, and if you thought this was
something Jewish couples dont do, think again. Its
becoming increasingly popular to eschew the options
available here in the UK and jet off to sunnier climes
where an outdoor chuppah is a realistic option and friends and
family can join you for a three-day celebration.
A wedding abroad means that the bride and groom and their
parents get to spend quality time with their guests, all of whom have
left their day-to-day life behind to be swept along on the romantic
tide that you have created for them. If you time it well, many of the
guests will work a summer holiday around the wedding and you will
feel less guilty about asking them to travel.
My first experience of a wedding abroad was when I attended
one in a castle in the hills overlooking Tuscany. The moment the
invitation arrived, it was only a question of sorting out the footwear
(there are many cobbled streets in Italy) and never a question of
whether or not we would go.
I have since discovered that Italy is one of the most popular
destinations for Jewish couples tying the knot abroad. This is hardly
surprising. Not only does it offer beautiful city bases such as Rome
or Florence with their magnificent synagogues, which date back to
the 1870s there are also the picturesque lakes and the romantic
countryside with magnificent views. Plus mild temperatures,
pleasant summers and ease of access from anywhere in the UK.
Food and wine also play an important role, says Valentina
Lombardi at Italian Wedding Company. Even if you have a kosher
wedding, traditional Italian menus can be designed and paired with
fine Italian wines. British couples who choose to marry here are
looking for that Italian flair that will make their event a little more
exotic and incredibly special.
If you want to be sure of good weather (but remember, Italy can
be unpredictable), hold your wedding between May and
September, avoiding August when temperatures can reach 45
degrees. Michelle Jacobs at Ritzy Events, a UK-based wedding

Marriage Italian style

A couple gets married inside the The Great Synagogue of Rome

planner who has organised weddings in Italy, advises choosing

a venue that has an indoor banqueting area, just in case.
Weddings at the lakes or in the countryside tend to be less formal
(and a little cooler). Here is the chance to enjoy outdoor spaces and
breathtaking landscapes. The look and feel of the event could be
country chic laced with romance in a really relaxed atmosphere.
The city makes everything a little more formal, with a ceremony at
a synagogue and the reception at one of many wonderful big
palaces. Most of these have an outdoor space for the reception,
while the dinner is held indoors surrounded by exquisite Italian art.
When making a wedding abroad you cannot do it alone. You can
use an Italian or UK-based planner, and most venues have their own
events team, so your planner will liaise with them. There is lots
more to think about when making a wedding abroad than at home,
says Michelle at Ritzy Events.
In the UK there are many
venues that are familiar with
hosting a Jewish wedding, but
this isnt the case in Italy. Small
details may need to be explained,
like the fact that a room is needed
for the bedecking ceremony. The
florist may not have dressed a
chuppah before so will need to
be briefed. If you are holding an
Aufruf, you need to find out the
level of orthodoxy for example
do the women need to wear hats?
If you are bringing your own UK
rabbi over, he will not be licensed
in Italy, so you will need to have
an additional civil ceremony in the
UK.
Entertainment is a huge part of
a Jewish wedding and it may not
work to use an Italian band,
especially one that is not used to
playing at Jewish functions. It is
not unusual to fly over your own
band, but you need to factor in
the cost of this.

The attention to detail required may seem overwhelming but

picture this At the wedding I attended, the bride, groom, family
and friends all stayed at the same hotel in Florence, where rooms
had been secured at a special rate. Close family were invited to a
special Friday night dinner, those who wanted to attended Shabbat
services at the beautiful shul in Florence. On Saturday evening, there
was an informal welcome buffet-style dinner on the rooftop of the
Baglioni Hotel with breathtaking views of Florence stretching for
miles. The bride and groom welcomed us all and spent the evening
chatting to each and every one of the guests. We all got to know
each other and by the end of the evening were all firm friends. this
made for a great atmosphere at breakfast the next morning.
The day was our own to tour the city or relax in the sunshine, and
we were told to be dressed and ready at 4pm. The venue had been
kept a secret and we were taken by minibuses on a mystery tour and
ended up in Fiesole, a beautiful old town in the hills overlooking
Tuscany, whose central feature is a magnificent castello (castle)
dating back to 1031. This medieval masterpiece was our destination.
After a champagne reception in the exquistite gardens, we walked
through to the courtyard for a truly beautiful chuppah. Another
reception, this time with delicious canaps, while the courtyard was
transformed into a stunning dining hall. The sun went down, the
stars came out, the wine was poured, the food was served, the
pianist played. And then the party started outside on the terrace.
A traditional Italian wedding cake was constructed before our eyes,
then cut into and served. The evening ended with fireworks
cascading over the valley. Even the Dorchester cant compare to that!

FOOD GLORIOUS

FOOD

Stepanie Cramer of Salt Caterers

IF YOURE ANYTHING like my husband at

a simcha, you will scout out the prime
position for the canaps that are coming
out of the kitchen.
Stephanie Cramer, director of Salt
Caterers, knows your sort (and how to deal
with you more about which later) but she
understands why you do it.
Canapes are the favourite part of
any function, she believes. Its the
introduction to the main culinary event.
They form the sociable part of the day
youve got the cocktails the Kir Royales,
the peach blinis, the sparkling wine and
the mini burgers, the mini hot dogs... It is
the big part and people love it. And its
because we're Jewish and we love a lot of
food!
Having been involved in kosher
banqueting for more than 12 years,
Stephanie, who set up Salt Caterers last
year, knows how to give us what we want.
Mouth-wateringly, she reels off the trends
she has seen over the past two years.
Asian fusion style canapes are very in, she

Alex Galbinski speaks to Stephanie Cramer, director

of Salt Caterers about the role of canaps at a function

says. At functions, there have been salmon

bars, sushi stations, duck bars. We have
to make sure we look around, go to
restaurants, see whats different, what's
unique. Its also the way we serve it, the way
we present it.
Salts sashimi spoon, mini burgers and
fish and chips are a winner, as are their
Vietnamese spring rolls. The sushi and salt
beef stations also remain very popular.
But you always have to ensure that you
cater for the vegetarian and that there is a
good variety, she reminds.
However, she says people tend to stick
with what they know and what we're used
to. Everybody wants a burger, everybody
wants a latke.
And its not just what we eat, its how,
she says. We like to look for unusual
surfaces on which to present canaps
clocks, old-fashioned wooden vintage
boxes, vintage style cookie jars, birdcages,
fantastic slates... We serve cocktails in jam
jars and desserts in jars.
We try to be as creative as possible so

that when the canaps come out, how they

are offered is the first thing people see.
Whether its a spring roll or a mini burger, it
all needs to be beautifully presented and
they do set the tone for the rest of the
meal.
And if youre concerned that there are
too many people like my husband staking
out the place where the food is coming
from, Stephanie says reassuringly: Im in
that area, directing my waiting staff and
making sure the food is taken to all avenues
and all corners, not just to the people
standing by the kitchen!
Salt Caterers are accredited under the
London Beth Din and Stephanies partners
in the business are all experienced in the
restaurant trade.
She explains Salt Caterers ethos: What
were trying to bring to the table in kosher
hospitality is restaurant style food. Youve
just got to be creative all the time. Ive got
a degree in fine art and I majored in textile
design. I use my creativity when I speak to
clients.
Stephanie, who is South African and
came to the UK in 1998, says putting on
a function is like putting on a show. You
can be as good as your chefs and as good
as your waiting staff, but its about making
sure everything goes according to plan. Its
all that back of house that people arent
aware of. Its a lot of detail.
She is also happy to completely event
manage a function, including with all the
suppliers and shell do as many site visits
as possible to make sure the client is 100
percent happy. Ill hand hold from the
beginning to the end, she says.

THE FALAFEL QUEEN

STAR COVINGTON SET up The Falafel Queen as falafels have
always been popular in Israel and she wanted to bring a taste
of Israel to the simchas here in the UK.
She explains: Just walking down Ben Yehuda street in
Tel Aviv, youll find a falafel stall on every corner. Growing up
in Israel, falafels have always been a childhood dish. The
authentic taste and smell, the variety of salads on offer and not
forgetting the creamy houmous and techina brings back lovely
memories.
Customers of The Falafel Queen vary. Some prefer a healthier
option and the novelty of hiring a mobile trailer to their simchas,
while others prefer the more traditional Israeli style buffet simcha.
Star tells me a fun fact: The worlds largest falafel was
recorded in 2012 weighing a whopping 74.75kg. It contained
80kg of chickpeas, 5kg of onions and 2kg of fresh herbs. The
falafel was then deep fried in 350 litres of vegtable oil.
I doubt the health-conscious would approve!

EDIBLE MEMORABLES

IT WAS WHILE looking at the sweets and chocolate gift

presentations walking through Selfridges earlier this year that
Talisa Rose had the idea of setting up her own business.
She started Edible Memorables in July this year and created
a range of edible trees for Rosh Hashanah, the bestseller of
which was the fruit and nut tree. Other popular trees are made
with Haribo sweets, marshmallows, Maltesers, buttons, flying
saucers, chocolate truffles, Smarties and many other goodies
and she can provide kosher and vegetarian sweets.
Talisa also makes bespoke table centres for events and
corporate gifting, personalised heart of slab chocolates, and
personalised chocolate lollies. Her sushi inspired range of
sweets are also particular popular.
The 26-year-old has many years of experience under her
belt, having worked in the hospitality industry since she was 14
doing PR and marketing for exhibitions and events.
Her products are bought for all manner of occasions,
including birthdays, bar/bat mitzvahs, weddings, to give to new
parents, for Jewish festivals and for Christmas.

SHUKA CATERING
ON ITS WEBSITE, Shuka Catering says the company is
unapologetically passionate about authentic flavours from the
Middle East.
The zaatar and Parmesan cod, served with steamed pak choi,
spinach sauce and butter bean gremolata, caught my eye straight
away. Ziek Gelkoff, Shukas head chef says the preserved lemon
chicken kofta and mangold leaves definitely win the most votes. We
get asked to make them at almost every buffet event, he explains.
They are definitely unique in their flavour and texture.
Zieks parents were the first to influence him with their passion for
food and adventurous streak to explore foreign cultures and cuisines
his father was the chef on the kibbutz in the Negev on which Ziek
grew up. But my own travels and my Israeli origin are the true
shapers of the Shuka brand.
In a market that is becoming increasingly crowded with Israeli or
Middle Eastern offerings, Ziek describes Shukas forte. We take all
the best dishes and ingredients from the Middle East and focus on a
modern delivery of food, he says. We deliver authentic cusine in a
modern format and an interpretation of other world foods. The focus
is the Levant, but the rules are to have fun and explore food.

HOLY MATRIMONY
WHO HASNT DREAMT of a wedding in a lush garden
surrounded by beautiful flowers, with blue skies melting
into warm evenings, a candle-lit outdoor chupa and reception followed by a delicious meal in a stunning
venue.... unfortunately an outdoor wedding is nigh on
impossible to arrange in England as our typical summer
is typically unreliable and often wet and miserable, with
the summer of 2015 being a quintessential example.
Luckily a wedding in Israel is a realistic alternative and
Terra Caesarea is the perfect location. This purpose
built wedding and events luxury complex built next to
the ancient Roman city combines classic and modern elements in perfect harmony and boasts 16 hectares of

glorious gardens with numerous enchanted corners,

ponds and pergolas. During 11 months of the year you
can rely on the weather to plan a romantic outdoor
chupa and reception, while the delicious catering can be
enjoyed in the comfort of the incredible spacious
wooden and glass indoor hall, followed by a fabulous
party where the latest light and sound systems come
into their own.
David Cohen of Terra Caesarea will be at the simcha
show and is happy to answer any questions about his
fantastic venue.... but usually the answer will be yes
because Terra are happy to do whatever you want for
your special occasion. David said Israel is the homeland

for the Jewish people and many chose to have their

wedding there as a symbolic and meaningful start of
their married lives. We usually have around 15 English
weddings each year but we would love to have more
people coming from England to get married in our beautiful space.
With years of experience and the best staff around
David Cohen and his team at Terra Caesarea will help
you plan and enjoy your wedding day from start to finish. Come and say hi at the Simcha show and take away

entertainment and decor and remain as impartial as
possible. We want the hosts to be guests ast their own party so we
oversee the whole event from start to finish. To make sure that
everything runs smoothly, Genie provide an event manager and
assistant at the majority of their events who take care of absolutely
everything from sound checks, lighting, name place cards, even
holding on to the speeches until required.
What could be better than to make your simcha a whole
weekend of celebrations from Friday night dinner to a kiddush
lunch, Saturday night party to Sunday tea..... and in place of hiring
a venue for each event having a marquee in your own home. We
can help make a simcha a complete weekend event keeping the
momentum going throughout explains Jonathan Groman of Tent

venue, why not have your own? If youve got a garden then you can

Apart from the food Tent Events can provide everything you her husband Adrian. The connection comes with experience

Recommendations from friends and family are also important

Many people might have been in one of Tent Events theirs comes through endorsements. At Blend we know your

SIMCHA SUPPLEMENT

THATS

ENTERTAINMENT

A big night needs big talent and Debra Barnes found

it

AS ANY PARENT of a child in a Jewish secondary school

will know it can be a struggle to find something original
for your simcha particularly for a bar or batmitzvah when
there seems to be one or two! - every weekend. Ilai
Szpiezak founded Ilaidance in 2013 to provide
unforgettable entertainment to make all simchas special.
Along with the more mainstream singers, dancers
and magicians, Ilaidance can also provide jugglers,
free-runners, LED hula-hoopers and more. All of our
performers are of the highest quality and level of
professionalism said Ilai.
We are a boutique producing house rather than just
booking agents continued Ilai, which enables us to
produce something really personalised and unique for
each event whether it is a show from our menu like Step
It Up a fabulous fusion of break, hip hop and LED
dancing, or Chazak a male troupe of Jewish dancers
and acrobats, or even a flash mob of family members
suddenly performing along to the delight and surprise of
their guests. Ilaidance are delighted to be showcasing our
new tap dance waiters and an extract from Showtime at
the Simcha Show every hour from 11.55am onwards.
Of course everyone wants their function to be magical
and one sure way of guaranteeing that is to invite James

Anthony as he brings the magic.

The 34-year-old from Manchester got hooked on magic
as a child and is now wowing audiences in shows on cruise
shops around the world.
James was a former British junior ice dancing
champion, but was lured away from the ice by magic and
has mastered everything from close-up trickery to
hypnotism. Imagine having a blend of David Blaine and
Derren Brown entertaining the guests at your wedding,
whether its up close and personal as he wanders from
table-to-table or holding court in the middle of the
dance floor as he make things disappear. Hopefully the
bride and groom wont go anywhere, but imagine the
screams of excitement from the teens at a bar or
batmitzvah as James performs coin magic, card magic,
fire tricks, dazzles with cups and balls, and makes
champagne bottles travel through tables.
Blending modern street-style magic with mindreading
and mentalism, James provides the kind of entertainment
you would expect to see in Las Vegas but it can also be
at your function. Now that is magic.

SIMCHA SUPPLEMENT

AND WHEN ITS

ALL OVER
It is easy to forget that at the end of all the wedding celebrations,
the bride and groom get some well deserved us time on their
honeymoon. And after all the bar/batmitzvah planning, the
host and hostess might feel justified in taking some down time
away from the kids. To help them on their way, we have found
some places far afield, in Europe and in the UK oh yes, and
M i c h a e l G o l d went to The Goring...

Domaine de Manville

Cruising may not be the obvious first choice for

a honeymoon, but it is exceptionally good value and
you will be surprised by just how
relaxing it is to be at sea getting
pampered while seeing new
places many of them romantic
destinations in the Mediterranean,
unspoiled Caribbean beaches,
exotic Arabian towns and the
amazing natural wonders of the
Norwegian fjords and Baltic cities.
Onboard an MSC cruise
vessel, there is a wide choice of cabins and suites,
many with private balconies for added luxury or,

for the ultimate in privacy and indulgence, theres

the MSC Yacht Club on their four biggest
Fantasia-class ships. This is the
original
ship-within-a-ship
concept as the Yacht Club area
is set apart from the rest of the
ship and can only be accessed
with a special room card. It
boasts a 24-hour butler service,
private pool area and gourmet
cuisine in the private restaurant.
All MSC vessels are equipped
with Balinese-themed Aurea Spas, which offer
some special couples treatments designed

specifically for honeymooners who like to have

massages side by side. It is also worth noting that
food is included for cruise guests, which counts
towards the general great value message when
booking that special vacation.
MSC makes sure that early bookers get the
best deals, which is great for honeymoon
planning because it means guests can book
further out and budget more effectively.
A seven-night Mediterranean fly-cruise aboard MSC
Preziosa departing on 25 June 2016 is 949pp (based on
two sharing a balcony cabin) and includes return flights to
Genoa with British Airways and overseas transfers. Visit

Celebrity Cruises are equally fabulous for
honeymooners and onboard the boats Celebrity
Reflection and Celebrity Silhouette, newlyweds
can enjoy quality time together in The Alcoves
which are eight cabana-style settings for rent on
the perimeter of The Lawn Club where couples
can feast on themed picnic baskets or theres the
Hideaway, a peaceful retreat with an avant-garde,
cosy, tree house design, which is another private
space. The Canyon Ranch spa offers couples
massage and there is a new menu which features
Reiki healing energy therapies. Newlyweds
wanting a honeymoon full of the finer things can
enjoy a stay in a suite where they will have a
private butler and access to the exclusive guestsonly restaurant, Luminae.
On Celebrity Silhouette a 14-night Western Mediterranean
cruise is available from 2,580 per person. For more info,

PRINCESS FOR A NIGHT

UK
The Olde Bell in Hurley, Berkshire, is the perfect
place to hold a beautiful winter wedding as it
does fantastic packages starting at 85 per
person for hire of the Tithe Barn, with Bucks Fizz
on arrival, a three-course wedding breakfast
and a complimentary bridal suite. But The Old
Bell is equally good for a romantic celebration
as, for just 199 per couple, an overnight
stay includes chilled champagne on arrival,
a three-course dinner in the award-winning
restaurant, handmade luxury chocolates
delivered to the room and a full English
breakfast. For more information on wedding

What is a guy supposed to do when he wants

his partner to feel like a princess? Some might
say head straight to Harry Winston, but I had a
better idea. The Goring. The hotel in Victoria is
the place you take a wannabe princess as it was
where Catherine Middleton aka Kate, the
Duchess of Cambridge, stayed the night before
she married the future king, aka Prince William.
Fittingly, my girlfriend also happens to be
called Katherine, so it felt absolutely right
for her to be spending the night at the same
hotel that witnessed the transformation of
a commoner to a royal. They certainly know a
thing or two about kings and queens at The
Goring as thats how we felt from the moment
we arrived and the doormen politely took our
bags and accompanied us to the reception
desk.
On entering our room escorted by yet
more staff I was immediately struck by how
similar in size the bed was to that in the
Princess And The Pea fairy story. The good
news about this bed, however, was so that it
was so remarkably comfortable, no pea would
stand a chance. Being taken on a tour of ones
bedroom seems odd, but there were so many
features to explain it was necessary,
particularly as The Goring is known for its
personable service. I can certainly vouch for
that as we received a phone call from the hotel
manager to check on our well-being and every
single member of staff (regardless of whether
wed been introduced) referred to us by name.
Our personal footman was called Jasper
and we liked him a lot as he brought us a

couple of delicious champagne cocktails.

There are five footmen in the hotel and each is
assigned to the four Belgravia Suites and the
Royal Suite. Katherine (my girlfriend not the
Duchess) quickly realized this was the place to
feel pampered with divine luxuries but in a
relaxed way, as The Goring isnt just polite like
a corporate machine, but a really friendly place
where staff have real personality and are able
to entice you in conversation with real interest.
Or as Harriet Rowlinson, the marketing
manager described it: Wed rather be fun
than corporate.

The Gorings managing director, David

Morgan Hewitt, explained: Everyone has
butlers but people with real style have
footmen. Service is what we are known for
and is what matters most in a good hotel.
The Goring is the only hotel in London that
has been family owned for more than a century
and, in January 2013, it was granted a Royal
Warrant of appointment to Her Majesty The
Queen for hospitality services.

S27

The warrant is best illustrated by the quality

of the food and drink, which is quite
exceptional, and the restaurant has a newlyawarded Michelin star (one of only four in
London). Every one of the fish dishes we tried
was divine, but can I suggest that if you ever go
to The Goring, you simply must have the
meringue with Pimms jelly. It definitely warrants
its own Michelin star.
Were delighted and honoured to be
recognised by Michelin for what we are trying
to achieve, said the hotel owner, Jeremy
Goring. Its only taken 105 years.
After dinner, we retired to our room
and requested Paracetomol as Katherine
had a headache. It was delivered by
Jasper with a small note congratulating us
on our anniversary (a year together) and it is
small touches like that which make the
hotel special. On the note of small touches,
I should also mention that every room comes
with a small stuffed sheep to take away with
you, which stemmed from a joke into a full-on
quirk.
I genuinely dont think Ive ever had a better
nights sleep than in that Princess And The
Pea-style bed and when we eventually made it
down to breakfast, the familiar faces of the
friendly staff from the night shift partaking in
the morning shift were most welcome.
The only thing to surpass the Pimms
meringue was the morning orange juice and
Im thinking about it now as I write this.
Needless to say, Katherine was sorry to leave
the royal haven as it really made her feel like a
princess but at least she got to go home with
a prince.

EVER IMAGINED DANCING
with Flawless, singing with
Beverley Knight, or laughing to
Dara O Brien? Well thats
something Creation clients
have done. In fact, over the
past 15 years many people
have chosen Creation for their
party - their famous Showband,
the extremely popular Creation
DJ-Live, or one of their
outstanding discos. As founder
Simon Cooper explained - It
is exactly this experience
and reputation within the
community that has allowed us
to make the transition to
complete event planning.
Event planning is all about
connection, Simon adds. If you
can build a rapport with your
client then its much easier to
know what they want and deliver
a far better party.
Simon and his team offer a
complete event planning service
from venue sourcing and lighting
to table centres, timetabling and
transportation. Recent events
have included an elegant winter
wonderland batmitzvah in a
marquee and a summer
wedding in a private chateau in
Switzerland.
The man behind Creation is
founder and director Simon
Cooper, who began DJing at
the age of 16 and was planning
and promoting events soon
after that.
As Simon

THE
STORY
OF

CREATION

It may not be biblical, but Simon Coopers event company is certainly impressive
reminisces, At university I used
to put on club nights so me and
my friends bands could
perform at them. My parents
bought me my first drum at the
age of 8 and I havent really
looked back since!
Now as owner and manager of
The Creation Showband, Simon
is proud of the internationally
acclaimed and award winning 13
piece ensemble made up of
flamboyant musicians and
dynamic vocalists. Creations
musicians and singers also find
time to perform with a few

household names, as Simon

revealedIts been such a superb
12 months for us in the industry.
Our guys have been seen
recently performing with Rita
Ora, Olly Murs, Paul McCartney,
and Michael Buble, as well as on
the X Factor, Strictly Come
Dancing, Graham Norton and
The David Letterman Show!
The unique quality of our act,
and the aspect of our
performance which our smaller
band - Creation DJ-Live - share,
is our interaction. All of our
performers, not just the

singers,engage with the crowd

and get them on to the
dancefloor. Simon loves his work.
Its a privilege to be part of one
of three or four major memories
in someones life. I love meeting
people and helping them create
truly memorable events. And
once the pain has gone from
peoples feet after dancing all
night, what they will remember
for a lifetime is the atmosphere
which we helped create. The
Creation team aim to make every
party different. A good party
reflects the personality of the

host and we suggest little

touches to make each one
unique. We planned a party
recently for a barmitzvah boy
who was a keen guitarist, so we
designed him a light up guitar
which connected wirelessly to
our sound system, so he could
enter the room in total darkness
to an adoring crowd whilst
playing a Kings of Leon track on
his flashing guitar and with
Creation DJ-Live on stage
backing him up! We designed
another barmitzvah around a My
Sweet Sixteen theme, fully

equipped with personalised

MTV logos, an 8ft tall illuminated
robot that walked and danced
around the dancefloor firing
smoke, and a barmitzvah boy
who entered the room on a real
motorbike!
Some clients know exactly
what they want but others need
guidance, which is why Creation
offer a truly bespoke service,
tailoring a package to suit the
client and offering them as much
or as little support as they need.
The production side of the
business is one which Creation
see as pivotal to the growth of
the company over the years,
since lighting and dcor is so
crucial to the ability to transform
a space and deliver a clients
vision for what their room will
look like. We think our clients
have warmed to the fact that
since we have produced arena
concerts and large gala dinners
we know exactly what were
talking about when it comes to
lighting, set design and video for
their event
Ultimately though, their
passion is all about the music.
But dont take their word for it,
come and see them yourselves
as their excellent Creation DJLive is going to be performing
every hour during the Simcha
show for everyone to experience
the excitement and energy first
hand. www.creation-events.uk.com

TWISTED MONKEY
THERE ARE MORE REASONS than you can count to
have your function at Twisted Monkey, but wed like
to share a few. For starters, the Hertfordshire venue is
likely to be within easy driving, if not walking, distance
from where many of you live and there is nothing guests
like more than a short journey. More importantly, the
bar/restaurant venue, which is split-level and situated in
the caf quarter of Watford's newly refurbished parade, is
perfect for a let-your-hair down, stomping party to celebrate a bar or batmitzvah. The owners have made sure
that the club, which is open for afternoon coffee, early evening cocktails or a late night party VIP, is
fun, flamboyant and quirky and it can be transformed into anything your boy or girl desires for their
celebration night. So if you want Twisted Monkey to be a rainforest for your simcha, it can be done as
the building is a canvas that will suit any theme, but is also great left in its natural eclectic state with
lots of wood, leather and metal seating.
If you choose from their menu, you can feast on Pan-Asian street food or delicious bistro-style
dishes to tempt your tastebuds. And if you keep kosher, you can bring in your own caterer.
To see what Twisted Monkey is like, why not pop down and try one of their classic cocktails during
the week and see what the venue is like for yourself.
But dont forget to enter the competition at the Twisted Monkey stand at the Simcha show on
Sunday, as you stand to win the venue hire, bar staff, door staff, event management and a chef.
