Introduction
Refractionisthebendingofawaveafterhittinganewmaterialandchangingspeeds.Inour
experimentwelookedathowrefractionwouldaffectalaserbeamwhenitenteredanew
material.Weusedsohcahtoaandrighttrianglestosetupourexperimentandmeasurethe
angles.Afterfinding
and
weusedthemtofindtheindexofrefractionandvelocityforeach

materialwetested.Afterfindingtheindexofrefractionandvelocitywithourexperiments,we
wouldcheckouranswersandassesserrorsinourexperiments.

Procedure
1. Firstwefilledtheflaskwith100mLofwater,setupthelaser,andpluggedtheArduino
intothecomputertopowerit.
2. Thenwetapedthelasertothetopoftheflaskandplacedapieceofpaperonthebase
oftheringstand.
3. Wethenelevatedtheflaskofwaterontwocalculatorssotherewasspacebetweenit
andthepaperandturnedonthelaser.
4. Thenweproceededtomarkwherelaserhitthepaperthroughthewater.
5. Nextwetookapenandmovedittillthelaserbeamhititrightatthewaterlevel,thenwe
markedthatonthepaperbelowthebeakeraswell.
6. Afterthatweusedthemetersticktomeasurethedistancebetweenthosetwopointsand
thenmeasuredtheheightofthewater,theheightofthelaser,andwherethelaserhit
thewater.
7. Thenweusedtrigonometrytofindtheentranceangleandrefractedangle,andfromthis
datafoundn,velocity,andcriticalangleforanalysis.
8. Afterthatweaddedsalttotheflaskforoursaltwatermediaandrepeatedsteps511
9. Next,weshinedthelaserthroughaglass,withthelaserata90angle.Wemeasuredthe
laserspointwithouttheglassonapieceofpaper,andthenthenewrefractedpointthat
camefromtheglass.
10. Finallywemeasuredthedistancebetweenthelaserandtheglassandthedistance
betweentheglassandthetwomarkedpoints.Again,weusedtrigonometrytofindthe
refractedangleandusedthisdataforouranalysis.

Conclusion
Ourindicesofrefractiondidnotagreewiththeacceptedvaluesforthematerials.Waterandglasssindices
ofrefractionwerehigherbutsaltwatersindexwaslowerthantheacceptedvalue.Overall,Ithinkour
techniquesformarkingthelaserwereinaccurate,aswehadtouseapenthatblockedourviewfromthe
laser.Wemeasuredthelaserafterithadgonethroughthewaterandtheflask.Also,whenmeasuringthe
glassweusedatriangleshapedpieceofglassthatmayhaverefractedatmoreofanangle.Perhapsnext
timewecouldfindamoreexactwaytomeasurerefractionanduseapieceofglasswithnoslopesorsides
beinghitatanangle.
