Overusing and misusing SNS and other social media

By using Social networking services, people are connected without

facing each other. SNS helps people communicate without speaking face
to face. The speed of sharing information is amazingly fast. In addition, it
helps people manage their relationships in many ways. People can
communicate with various other people even with foreigners. These are
the reasons why almost every student uses SNS daily. However, overusing
and misusing SNS have many bad aspects on the other side.
Firstly, cyber bullying is the biggest problem these days. Cyberbullying
is bullying that takes place using electronic technology. (US
government) Cyberbullying includes mean text messages or emails,
rumors sent by email or posted on social networking sites, and
embarrassing pictures, videos, websites, or fake profiles. According to the
data from 2013 Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance Survey finds that 15% of
high school students (grade 9-12) were electronically bullied in the past
year. What makes it worse, many students who were cyberbullied do not
report bullying to adults. Only 1 in 10 victims will inform a parent or
trusted adult of their abuse.(Connolly, 2014) It is because of the negative
messages about tattling and snitching and their concern about retaliation.
As a result, students who are cyberbullied are more likely to skip school,

have lower self-esteem, have more health problems.

The next effect of misusing SNS is a leakage of personal information.
People post on SNS to share their daily lives, but the problem is, it can be
seen even by a third-person who has no relation with that person. Take
this example. Bob may recommend Alice as "the best steak chef in
Boston" on his own page, and thereby inadvertently reveal Alice's
occupation and the city she lives in. (Chen, 2016) In this case, Bob may
unintentionally reveal personal information of Alice to many people who
dont know about Alice. Whether it is intentional or not, Alice does not
know the whole process. Like this, people can see easily other persons
information through SNS. What makes it worse, the personal information
which was disclosed in SNS can be used commercially and in crimes.
Therefore, it is very important to be careful about the leakage of our
personal information.
Lastly, Overusing SNS leads people to SNS addiction recently. Most
people these days are holding their smart phones and using SNS in the
street, bus, school, toilet, and everywhere. Many of them tend to spend
too much time on SNS even they have lots of things to do. Twitter is a
waste of time, said Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson. He
added:
I don't understand it, to be honest with you. I don't have the time to do it.
There are a million things you can do with your life other than that. Go to
a library and read a book. I'm serious. What a waste of time. (Ferguson,

People do not necessarily quit using SNS all at once as he said, but people
need to reduce time spending on SNS. Furthermore, people can do more
productive and active works in the real world.
Engaging with social media is very much a double-edged
sword.(Paul,2010) It has a lot of strength to people, but we should also
give attention to its bad aspects. It is very important to keep balance
between SNS and a real world. Keep contact with people in the online and
get useful information from SNS. At the same time you have to pay
attention to our personal information protection, reduce cyberbullying,
and spend less time on SNS.
