Promotion and Tenure Committee Members: My name is Carmen Chaplain (formerly Limerick) and | graduated from Gardner-Webb this past December with an Exercise Science degree. I had the pleasure of having Dr. Hartman as a professor for every semester from my sophomore year on. There was actually one semester where | had him for 5/6 of my classes. With that being said, I got know him pretty wel. ‘There are not enough good things that can be said about him as a professor, advisor, or an individual He is an excellent teacher who will take an adequate amount of time to explain something if he realizes his students aren’t understanding it. I was always the student that asked too many questions about material he taught us or assignments he gave us. He would answer every single one of my questions and always had an open door at his office that I could come by and get help. He constantly pushed me to be a better student and always challenged me academically. While Dr. Hartman would assign challenging assignments, he was always the first to tell you when you did a good job and the potential he saw in you. Coming trom a very recent college student, this is something that is always needed and almost never done. I sincerely believe he is one of the main reasons I succeeded so much in college. ‘While he did pass along some of his knowledge in Exercise Science, he also taught me practical and, “real world” things in his classes. He often made it a requirement in his classes to go to resume building workshops, networking workshops. and mock interviews. He also highlighted the importance of developing into a young professional. And he alway’ taught these things in a fun way. Actually, one of my favorite college memories was when our Exercise Seience Seminar class attended an etiquette dinner with various professors, the dean of students, and other notable individuals from Garnder-Webb. At the time, [ didn’t see the point ofall these things, but now being, in the working world for 6 months working at a cardiology office, | am so thankful forall he made us do. Tam constantly complimented on how professional 1 am for me to just be 21. One of my favorite things about my college experience is how close my Exercise Science class was, including the professors. Dr. Hartman isn’t one of those professors that you only see on the days that ‘you have class with him. He often had brunch at his house for our class, cookouts, and even nights ‘where he would make his famous chili for us. U went to multiple dinners that him and his wife held for my class, [ also had the opportunity of going with a few other students to the South Eastern American College of Sports Medicine conference in Jacksonville, FL with Dr. Hartman and Dr. Granniss. He does a great job at really getting to know his students and providing extracurricular opportunities for them. | learned so much in the 3 years that I was a student of Dr. Hartman, From exercise testing, to how {0 obtain an internship, to how to act professionally in a work setting. To say that ! am a better student, person, and young professional because of him would be an understatement. | would definitely recommend him to the full rank as a professor so that other students may benefit from Dr. Hartman as much as I did.
