FURTHER MATHEMATICS
Introduction
Mathematics is the study of function and pattern in number,
logic, space and structure. It provides both a framework for
thinking and a means of symbolic communication that is
powerful, logical, concise and unambiguous. Essential
mathematical activities include abstracting, proving, applying,
investigating, modelling and problem solving.
All students will engage in the following mathematical
activities:
1.

2.

3.

Apply knowledge and skills: learning and practicing

mathematical algorithms, routines and techniques and
using them to solve standard problems.
Model, investigate and solve problems: creative
application of mathematical knowledge and skills in
unfamiliar situations.
Use technology: effective and appropriate use of
technology in mathematics and its applications.

Further Maths Course Content:

Further Maths Units 3 & 4 consists of a core unit and two
modules chosen by the school:
Core:

Data Analysis

Modules: # 1 - Matrices
# 2 - Networks and Decision Mathematics

Course Outline 2016

Outcomes
Both units have three outcomes:
1.
Define and explain key concepts, in relation to the topics from the selected areas
of study, and apply a range of related mathematical routines and procedures.
2.
Apply mathematical processes in non-routine contexts and analyse and discuss
these applications of mathematics.
3.
Use technology to produce results and carry out analysis in situations requiring
problem-solving, modeling or investigative technique or approaches.

Assessment Structure:
Unit 3, the CORE SAC is worth 60% of the 34% and Unit 4 is 40% of the 34% allocated
for School Assessed Coursework mark allocation.
Unit 3;
Core Data Analysis
-

SAC1 : Application Task over 4 x 75 minute

sessions (on chap 1-7)

SAC2: Modelling/Problem Solving Task over 2 x

75 minute sessions (on chapters 8-10)

SAC3: Modelling/Problem Solving Task over 2 x

75 minute sessions (on chap11-13)

Unit 4:
Module #1: Matrices

Module #2 : Networks
-

SAC4: Modelling/Problem Solving Task over 2 x

75 minute sessions (on chap14-16)

End of Year Exams:

Exam 1:
- 90 minute multiple choice exam on whole the years work.
- Worth 33% of final assessment.
Exam 2:
- 90 minute extended questions on whole the years work.
- Worth 33% of the final assessment.

Satisfactory completion
The award of satisfactory completion for a unit is based on a decision that you have
demonstrated achievement of the set of outcomes specified for the unit. This decision
will be based on the teachers assessment of the students overall performance on
assessment tasks designated for the unit.
