Project: Create Your Own Systems

Introduction
Systems of linear equations are a useful way to solve common problems in different areas of
life. The BEST way to understand the value of learning about Systems of Linear Equations is to see
how you can use them in your life.
This is an assignment to show your creative side. You will be writing a real-world scenario
(true, fictional, or semi-fictional) constructed in a manner where you will need to utilize what youve
learned about Systems of Linear Equations in order to set up and solve the problem you will write.

Assignment
Using the recent word problems for inspiration, create your own problems that must be solved
by only using two linear equations to find the answer. Be as CREATIVE as youd like, but make sure
to set up a word problem so that a reader can correctly define the variables and set up an
appropriate system of equations to be solved
Project Details
1. (BE CREATIVE!!) Create your own word problems for systems of equations. (30 pts)
DO NOT reuse examples we have done and change the numbers around. SHOW us your
imaginative side or maybe even tell the reader about something important to you.

#1 Your Word Problem Completed on a Google Doc is Due: M

ay 26th (Thursday)

Period 2: Word Problem Submission Doc

Period 3: Word Problem Submission Doc
2. You must complete all the task below for your problem:
a. Define your variables specifically and correctly
(10 pts)
b. Write two reasonable equations to form your systems of equations (
20 pts)
3. SOLVE your problem TWO ways
i.
Use ALGEBRAIC method to solve. Show
all your work
and clearly state your final
answer in the units that would answer the question.
(20 pts)
ii.
Use GRAPHING to solve. Make sure your graph is on graph paper and you are using
a straightedge to graph your lines. Show
all your work
and clearly state your final
answer in the units that would answer the question.
(30 pts)
1. Title
2. x- and y- axes correctly and clearly labeled and numbered
3. x- and y- intercepts
4. Two straight lines
5. Point of intersection

#1-3 Completed on Paper is Due:

June 1st (Wednesday)

4. Presentation - your problem will be presented to your classmates (120 pts)

a. You have two ways present your problem
i.
PowerPoint
ii.
ActiveInspire
b. Clearly and passionately present your CREATIVE word problem
c. Clearly show and explain the 2 methods for solving the problem-- graphing, and algebraic
d. Clearly show and explain your graph and point of intersection (solution)
e. Address what was the best part and the hardest part about doing this project assignment.

Presentation is Due:
June 2nd (Thurs) & 3rd (Fri)
** The two methods should result in the same final answer. If not, then go back and find your mistakes**
