Rucking Sled

Ian Vanderloop, Conrad Hilleshiem

Introduction to Engineering and Design

June 2, 2016

Overview:
The purpose of this project was to create a rucking sled that rugby players can use by
themselves to practice rucking. Our group of Ian Vanderloop and Conrad Hilleshiem
wanted our rucking sled to be durable, simple to use, easy to move and add weight,
comfortable to player, and able to be operated by one player. Over about three weeks we
were able to design our rucking sled including all these features.

Materials List:

Paper and Pencil

Decision Matrix
Autodesk Inventor

Procedure:
First we brainstormed multiple ideas for our rucking sled.

We then created a decision matrix to decide what design met our standards the best.

Once we knew which rucking sled we wanted to create, we made a more in depth sketch
with dimensions along with a bill of materials.

When we knew what we wanted it to look like and how big we wanted it, we started to
design it on Autodesk.

After all the parts were made, we created an assembly and put them together to create our
final design.

Concepts covered:
There were many concepts covered in this project such as researching, brainstorming, and
sketching. We had to research about existing rucking sleds and how big the average

humans head and shoulders are so that we could make the rucking sled accordingly.
Once we had some background knowledge, we brainstormed multiple ideas that we could
create. We then sketched those ideas so we had a visual to look at and be able to choose
the one we like the most. This project also covered the concept of team work. In order for
this project to work out, we needed to collaborate effectively. This means if we disagreed
on something, we would have to come to one final conclusion that satisfied the both of
us.

Summary:
This project taught us how to execute a task in a certain time frame and figure out a
solution to a problem that we both face. We first made three sketches of our ideas. Then
we were able to decide what ones we wanted based on our criteria. After that we were
able to proceed in designing our final rucking sled on Autodesk. In the process we
encountered problems with our dimensioning. To fix that, we took a look at where we
possibly messed up. Once the problem was found we fixed our dimensions so that the
pieces would fit together correctly. The final design solved our problem of not being able
to practice rucking by yourself. We cooperated well as a group and came out with a good
final product. However, we couldve done better by making a prototype out of wood and
see how the design we chose actually performs.
