Romeo and Juliet Movie Notes
1968:
Much of the beginning dialogue was skipped
Biting one's thumb was like the middle finger
Romeo's cousin wants to keep the peace in Verona streets, whereas Juliet's does
not

In Italy in the fourteenth century the people were ruled by regional royalty
The Capulets start the fight, which is the same as the play
The costumes were colorful and bright like the original play
Captain Prince says if they cause one more disturbance they will pay for it with

their lives
1996:
Set in modern day Verona
The police are the owns who break up the fight, not the Prince
The Montagues began the fight in this movie, not the Capulets. This is different
from the play
The Capulets and Montagues are large corporate families
Reason for such a different prologue could be because in this modern era people
do not understand the Elizabethan language and the modern style is more relatable
The Montague and Capulets boys are portrayed as thugs
The costumes were more contemporary than the original version
