Food Waste

Wasted food is a growing problem in our modern society. The amount of food Americans throw away each year is
staggering. In 2013 alone, more than 37 million tons of food waste was generated, with only five percent diverted
from landfills and incinerators for composting.
-Sustainable Management of Food by EPA
each year 40 percent of food in the United States goes to waste, translating to $162 billion lost and wasted water,
energy, fertilizers, cropland, and production costs.
-Save the Food
Right now, were literally trashing more than one-third of our food supplyan ongoing crime against hunger, the
environment, efficiency, and common sense.

Food Recovery Hierarchy

The Food Recovery Hierarchy prioritizes actions organizations can
take to prevent and divert wasted food. Each tier of the Food
Recovery Hierarchy focuses on different management strategies for
your wasted food.
The top levels of the hierarchy are the best ways to prevent and
divert wasted food because they create the most benefits for the
environment, society and the economy.

Save The Food (AD Council)

Every couple of years, the AD Council selects a number
of significant public issues to bring awareness and
stimulate action. With the goal of making a difference, the
non-profit produces, distributes, and promotes various

public service announcements.

This year, AD Council decided to shed a light on the
importance of reducing Food Waste with their Save The
Food Campaign.

Food: Too Good To Waste

Food is wasted when we:

Buy more than we need

Store it incorrectly
Throw away leftovers
Cook too much

To combat the situation above the EPA, together with The West Coast Climate & Materials Management
Forum, has created the The Food: Too Good to Waste (FTGTW) Implementation Guide and Toolkit. The
guide is designed for community organizations, local governments, households and others interested in
reducing wasteful household food management practices.

Ugly Fruit & Veg

Ugly Fruit and Veg is a campaign run by Jordan Figueiredo, a Solid Waste
Specialist, Writer, Speaker and Anti-Food Waste Activist. The campaign
uses funny, beautiful and amazing images of less than perfect produce in
order to highlight the 20-40% of all produce that goes to waste due to strict
grocer cosmetic standards.
