Lesson Title/Topic: Paraphrasing


Target Concept: Paraphrasing and Plagiarism
Standards/Rationale: TEK 110.15(b)(24)(E) differentiate between paraphrasing and plagiarism
and identify the importance of citing valid and reliable sources.
Lesson Objectives:
TLW create 4 supporting evidence sentences
by paraphrasing research notes and cite
sources, with 75% accuracy.

Assessment:
Completed sentences

Materials: list of sources page, research plan, research articles, iPad, four sheets of large pad
paper with sticky side, four black markers, four articles of popular Texas city attractions
(Houston, Fort Worth, Austin, and San Antonio), 4R sheet, notebook paper, and pencil
Lesson Cycle: (Direct instruction)
The teacher will:
Focus/Mental Set:
Hang large sticky paper one on each
wall, leave one marker and one city
attraction article
Put students in groups
Set timer for one minute thirty
seconds
Tell students they are to skim the
article and list important facts
Call on groups ask them to give a
summary of the article using 2 facts
as a guide
Tell students today they are learning
about paraphrasing
Teacher Input:
Open PowerPoint entitled
Paraphrase/Plagiarism located on
the flash drive in file> Writing> 4th Six
Weeks> Research
Pass out 4R sheet
Explain the difference between
paraphrase and plagiarism

The student will:


Get into group
List as important facts while skimming
article
Give an oral summary including
specific two point (or facts) from
article

Watch PowerPoint

Explain and define reword, rearrange,


realize, and recheck as:
Reword - change like words
within the sentence
(synonyms)
Rearrange reconstruct
sentences by moving the
words
Realize some words and
phrases cannot be changed
names, dates, titles etc.
cannot be replaced, use
rearrange or reword keeping
important facts
Recheck make sure you still
have the original meaning
form the text
For example, Rewording a sentence
would mean that you change words
and replace them with words that
have the same meaning.
Ask students to complete reword on
4R sheet with partner
Guided Practice:
Instruct students to read silently
research article
Instruct table groups to highlight
information that answer research
questions
Use paraphrase techniques to write 4
new sentences.
Instruct groups to cite source
Independent Practice:
Tell students to get an iPad and login
into KidBlog App with partner
Instruct students to write with
partner a paragraph using the three
sentences they wrote with their
group activity
Remind students they may need to
reword some sentences to make the
paragraph flow

Complete 4R worksheet with

Read article
Highlight information related to
research questions
Write new sentences and cite source

Login into KidBlog on iPad with


partner
Write a cohesive paragraph including
three sentences
Post paragraph to blog

Closure:
Display sentence on white board
Tell students they will play the
telephone game with table groups
using sentence on the whiteboard.
Rules: Each person has to change the
sentence without changing the
meaning and share it with the person
to their right.
Set timer for one minute.
Ask each group to share the ending
sentence for the group.
