Itdatesbackoverhundredsofyearsagoandtodayhas
evolvedintomorethanjustasport,butalsoitbases
itselfonspiritualbelievesthatgodswillprotectyou
fromtheoceanthroughthissportwhenlovesonesand
naturearespirituallyprotected.Thesportsitselfhas
beenknowntobehighlyaddictiveduetoconsumingall
thespiritualpassionslinkedwithinthesportandfrom
theheartofallOceansandWaves.

Surfing has been a sport that started as something
spiritualespeciallyintheislandsofHawaii.Surfing

goes back thousands of years to the 1769 by Joseph


Banks who was on the HMS Endeavour during the Third
VoyageofCaptainJamesCook.Surfingbecameacentral
part of the ancient Polynesian culture and predate
EuropeanContact.
It wasnt until the year of 1810 that the surfing
culture came into Ancient Hawaii, however it was
createdasamorerecreationalactivity,hobby,extreme
sportorevenacareerlikeitistoday.Itwasseenas
apartoftheHawaiianslifestylefromthespirtofthe
surfing sports. Its came from the Hawaiian roots and
valuesofwhatthemasaculturebelievedin.Inthis
casethelovefortheseaandthelandsotheycanhave
aconnectionwithnatureandtheloveoftheirfamily.
ItwasknownasheenaluwhichtranslatedintoEnglish
meantWavesliding.Astheyenteredsuchamysterious
ocean at the time they prayed to the gods for
protection and strength to undertake the powerful
water.
Threetypesoftreeswhereusedtomaketheboardthese
wereKoa,uluandwiiwii.Thesetresswouldbedugout
and then a fish would be placed in the hole as an
offering to the gods. This would then determine the
shape of the board one being Olo, which is aboard
where its thick in the middle and gradually thinner
towards the edges (Example of this board shown on
screen). Then the Kiko othat would range in length
from1218feetsandrequiremaneuverskills.(Example
shownonScreen)Thenfinallythethirdonebeingthe
Alaiaboard which is around 9 feet long and requires
greatskillstorideandmaster.(Exampleshown)

North America 3 Hawaiian princes came to California,


wheretheystartedtobringthesportofsurfingtothe
mouthofSanLorenzoRiveroncustomredboards.Then
this lead to the Father of Modern Surfing being
brought over from Hawaii to demonstrate surfboard
riding as a publicity stunt to promote LAs
HuntingtonsrailroadownedbyHenryHuntingtonwhothe
local beach was named after. George Freeth travelled
upthecoasttodemonstratethesportandhowtohave
life guard skills to stop less danger that can come
fromthesport.
ThesportbecameverypopularintheUSparticularlyon
Virginia Beach in Virginia in 1912. James Matthias
JordonJuniorcaptivatedthelocalastridea110pound,
9 foot Hawaiian redwood board. This particular board
wasbelievestohavebeenbetween1215feettallbut
hadanarrowshapednose.(Exampleofthisshown)
Then this travelled to the country Australia where
surfing riding received nation exposure with the
exhibitions by Hawaiian Olympic Sprint champion Duke
Kahanamoku in the summer of 1914 and 1915. He toured
theEasternstatesforextensiveSwimmingcarnivalsand
he appeared in the Domain Pool in Sydney where he
smashed his previous world record of 100 yards by a
full second. And due to his success of the sport his
board is displayed in the Freshwater Surf Life Saving
ClubinSydney,Australia.

Atthebeginningofthe20th CenturyinHawaiiaplaced
called Waikiki decided to reestablish surfing as a
sport.DukeKahanamokutheAmbassadorofAlohahelped
expose surfing to the world. Author Jack London from
SanFranciscowroteaboutthesportafterattemptingto
surf on his visit to the islands. This then showed
surfing progressing through the innovations of board
designs and increasing public audience. The primary
locations became HAWAII, AUSTRAILIA and CALIFORNIA.
This was even though the first footage was filmed in
theUKoftheyear1929byLouisRosenbergandanumber
of friends being fascinated by the Australian surfers
theysaw.
1959ThefilmGidgetwasreleasedbasedonalife
ofasurferKathyKohnerZuckerman.Thisthenboosted
thesportpopularityimmensely.Bmoviesthenbeganand
surfing music like The Beach Boys and Surfers based
around the California beach culture. This then formed
thefirstideasaboutsurfingandsurfers.
An anonymous sleeve note on the 1962 album
SurfinSafari by the Beach Boys said: "For those not
familiar with the latest craze to invade the sun
drenchedPacificcoastofSouthernCalifornia,hereis
adefinitionof"surfing"awatersportinwhichthe
participant stands on a floating slab of wood,
resemblinganironingboardinbothsizeandshape,and
attempts to remain perpendicular while being hurtled
towardtheshoreataratherfrighteningrateofspeed
onthecrestofahugewave(especiallyrecommendedfor

teenagersandallotherswithouttheslightestregard
foreitherlifeorlimb)."
Fromthe1960sfadyearstothecreationandevolution
oftheshortboardinthelate60sandearly70stothe
performancehotdoggingoftheneondrenched1980sand
the epic professional surfing of the 1990s (typified
byKellySlater,the"MichaelJordanofSurfing").
In 1975, professional contests started Like the World
Surf League, Surfing Great Britain, Billabong and Rip
curl.

BASICMOVEMENTSOFSURFING
Whenitcomestothewatersportsthereareafewbasic
movements you need to know to be able to start this
sport.HereinfrontofmeisasurfboardandIwillbe
showingthebasicmovesoflearningthesportitself.
Soasyoucanseeherefromthetopoftheboard,this
part is called a Nose this particular part of the
boardsitsoutofthewater.Thispartwillaffectthe
entry into the wave, your paddling ability and Nose
riding.Itplaysalargeroleinhowyoudropintowaves
andhowquicklyyouturn.
Aswegoalittlefurtherdownontheboardtoeachside
oftheboardthesepartsarecalledRailsareforthe
amount of curvature used to affect acceleration and

manoeuvrability when surfing on the waves. They impact


tuberiding,planningspeedandturning,
Continuing down we have the main part of the board
called the deck and this is at the top side of the
surfboardandwherethesurfstandsandlaystopaddle.
Asubstancecalledwaxisappliedtothetopsurfaceso
you have more grip on the board. However you can also
seeaslightcambertothemiddleandthenbackrailis
known as a domed deck and this is so its easy to
createrailtorailmovements.
ThenreachingtothebottomoftheboardistheTail
whichalsositsoutofthewater.Itsdesignwillaffect
the performance of person on the board, its able to
control the amount of Manoeuvrability and control of
accelerationyouhaveonthewaves.
ThisneedwillalsohavewhatiscalledaLeashonthe
endofit.Themainuseforthisissothattheboardis
attachedtoyouranklesoyouhavenothreatoflosing
theboard.Itsmoreofabeginnerthingbutasyouget
moreadvancedyouwontneedone.
Nowforthebasicmovementsthatyouwilllearnonland
beforeheadingoutintothewater.Sofirstyouwantto
layonyourstomachflatdownontheboardwithyour
feethangingoffthebottom.Youwanttomakesureyou
areabletoliftyourchestuptolookupstraightin
frontofyou.
Thenthisiswhenyouwouldseeawavecomingbehind,
makesureitsatleast5surfboardsawayfromyouor
moresoyoucanbeginningtobuildupyourspeedon
paddling.Movingyourarmsbackandforthwithyour

chest.Normallyaroundaboutsixpaddlingandwhenyou
feelitspushingthenyouputyourhandsbythetopof
yourchestinsidetheboard.Thenpushyourfeetuponto
theboardlikethis.Thisenablesyoutothenuseyour
handstopushyourbodyupwhenyoureonthewater.
Thisiswhenyouwanttobeabletobounceupquickly
withyourlegshavingoneinfrontoftheotherbut
makingitsothefrontlegisonlyslightlyandthenthe
backoneismorebenthavethepressuredbalancebetween
thetwo.Butyourchestinfacingonesidelikethe
warriorpose.Thenwhilstonthewaterthiswouldbe
whereyoutestyourbalanceyouwontgetitstraight

professionalsurfingcompetitions.Thisstartedin1976
