Project Proposal

Essential Question: How can a Feminist club bring awareness to women in detention
centers?
Who - specifically, and preferably locally- is being affected by this problem?
Families from all around the US. Much of Pawtucket and Central Falls is made up of
immigrant families, who may or may not have dealt with
What is something you would like to do to help solve this issue?
I would like to bring
awareness to it. There has been activism work around it, and if more people were
aware, then the support for the movement would grow.
How will this positively impact the community?
(What do you hope to accomplish?)
It would be the community supporting itself; a large part of Central Falls,
Pawtucket, and Providence is made up of immigrants. Bringing attention to this very
real problem, would make it easier for legislature to be passed to alleviate it.
What organizations could you work with
? I wanted to work with Progresso Latino,
or English for Action. Mostly, Id like to work with people who have talked about this
problem.
Do you know anyone who could help you gain contact with that group
? Julio could
help with English for Action; My mom could help with Progresso Latino; Stacy could
get me contacted with Facing History and students from California.

Description of your Project: (3 paragraphs) Be sure to include what you hope to

accomplish and why, how you will do it, and how you will measure your impact.
Put it in a looking at society discussing
Take over a WRT 104 class

My project will be completed in three different steps.Firstly, I will do a presentation

explaining my senior topic: Women in detention centers. This will be done in my

WRT 104 class, where I will teach my peers about the lack of healthcare in
detention centers for women. Similarly, in March I will be leading a US History
class, talking to student about the activism work behind this movement. Through
this I hope to bring awareness to this issue, while bringing the womens narratives
into the story. Students in US History will be able to chose this problem as their
activism project.
The second part of my project, and arguably the most important, is my feminist
club, or Social theory club. We will meet 4-5 every tuesday. A typical meeting
would look like: 5 mins to settle down, 10 minutes to summarize the
reading/assigned work, 15-20, members discussion on the reading, answering
questions, and bringing up points, 5-10 mins I will talk about what I thought about
the reading, or important points that were missed, 10 minutes discussing what
members of the club want to do next week, and last 10-15 minutes are going to be a
debrief.
I want to bring awareness to women in detention centers, speak about feminist
topics, creating a safe space for feminist discussions, and to get people more
comfortable with the idea of feminism and possibly identifying as a feminist
themselves. To do this, I will assign readings that are important to social justice
movements, bring in narratives, bring in speakers, and talk about important
feminist icons.
To measure the impact of my club, I will have a mandatory survey at the beginning
and end of the club. The club members would rate their comfortability level on
topics, before and after discussions. However, the pre- and post- survey of joining
club will include questions like:
How do you define feminism
how likely are you to be outspoken of your feminism
Would you consider a feminist?
how likely would you be to vote for a candidate that wanted to
promote feminist ideas
How likely are you to be involved in a feminist group
I will also measure how many times students speak up during discussions.
The third step of my project would be inform the community of the
information given at my feminist club. One possibility of this would to help English
for Action increase their emphasis on gender for their mandatory faculty seminars.
For this, I would interview EFA about their faculty seminars, and see where they
could incorporate gender based readings, discussions. I am not sure if this would
work. Secondly, I could work with Tony or Paul P. to create a mini page in
Blackstones Website where students can access all the materials given at my club;
this could grow to include other clubs, such as debate. This is a multi-step project,
and I still need to work more on it.
