Collaboration: The students will work with a partner to conjugate English and Spanish verbs.
Development 1 (10 minutes): The teacher will ask students to give examples of verbs. Students
in Emerging and Developing stages may give a verb in their native language and then
translate to English. The verbs will be written on the board by the teacher. The definition of
infinitive (a verb that is not conjugated) will be written on the board and the teacher will explain
what an infinitive form of a verb is.
Independent Practice 1 (10 minutes): In groups of two, students will be given a worksheet with
10 different infinitive and conjugated verbs on it (in English). The students will be asked to
circle the infinitive verbs. Students in Emerging and Developing stages will be given a
worksheet with 5 verbs in their native language translated into English. Students will be
paired with other ELLs who have the same native language if possible. Students in
Expanding stage will be placed with a native English speaking classmate of similar ability
in Spanish.
Students will turn in this worksheet as soon as they are finished.
Development 2 (5 minutes): The teacher will explain subject nouns by writing them on the Smart
board in a chart. The subject of conjugation will be explained. Students in the Emerging and
Developing stages will be given a sheet with the same chart in their native language along
with a definition of the word infinitive. If they ask or are having trouble with Independent
Practice, students in the Expanding stage will be given the same sheet.

Development 3 (10 minutes): The teacher will then give the subject nouns in Spanish in a chart
on the Smart board. Students will be given a worksheet with Spanish verb infinitives ending in
AR and blanks for them to fill in the English equivalent. Pictures on the worksheet will help
students understand the meaning of the verbs. The worksheet will also have an example
conjugation. The verb endings will be highlighted so that students can see how they change with
subject nouns. Students in Emerging or Developing stages will be given the same worksheet
with some English translations and translations in the native language.
Students will watch a short video about verb conjugations and then work through at least one
verb chart as a class with the teacher.

Independent Practice 2 (10 minutes): With their partners from earlier in class, students will work
through three verb charts using the pictures to help them with the definitions. Students in the
Emerging, Developing, and Expanding stages will be given extra time to work on this
worksheet with an ELL teacher or with the Spanish teacher at another time.
Students will turn in this worksheet when they are done.
X. REVIEW AND ASSESSMENT:
Individual: Students will be assessed using the worksheets they turn in.
Group: Students will be assessed by me as they work in partners.
Written: Students will create their own verb charts as an exit ticket. Students in the Emerging
stage will be given a partially completed verb chart in Spanish as an exit ticket.
Oral: Students will be able to explain what an infinitive, verb, and subject noun are. I will point
to infinitives or conjugated verbs and ask students in the Emerging stage if the word I am
pointing to is an infinitive or not. They will answer yes or no.
Review Key Vocabulary: I will review the vocabulary at the end of class as well as any time we
will be discussing verbs in-depth.
Review Key Concepts: I will review conjugation the next few days in class and whenever a new
Spanish verb comes up.
