Youmayhaveheardthisbefore.Itissortofametaphorforwhatgoesoninsideus,and
IlikeitbecauseIbelieveitholdsalotoftruth.ButthestoryIllbetellingyouisslightlydifferent,
morecomplicated,andIalsobelievethatitmayholdalotoftruthastowhatsgoingoninthe
worldtoday.Soallowmetoretellthestoryyou'vejustred.

Therearetwowolves.Oneisdarkness,rageandchaos.Theotherislight,peaceand
order.Theyarealwaysfighting.Endlesscombatragesonbetweenthemastheyconstantly
throwthemselvesateachother.Sowhichwolfwins?Whicheveroneyoufeed.
Thisbattleragedonbetweenthetwoforalong,longtime.Andasthefighting
continued,theWhiteWolfbecamestronger,forhehadbeenfedmorethantheBlackWolf.
EventuallyhewasabletoovercomehisenemyandtheBlackWolfwasforcedtosurrender.
Beatenandbloody,helympedbackintothedarkshadowsoftheforest.Thefightwasover.At
leastthisonewas,thefightwasneverreallyover.
Monthspassedandallseemedtobewell.Thewhitewolfroamedtheforestinhis
victoryspreadinglight,happiness,andorderwhereverhewent.MeanwhiletheBlackWolf
begantoconsiderhisoptionsofattackingtheWhiteWolf.Hiswoundswerealmosthealedand
soonhewouldbereadytofight.Heaimedtodestroythispeacefulorderthatthewhitewolfwas
bringingtotheforest,andifhecould,hewouldliketokilltheWhiteWolf.Helikedthethought
ofrulingovertheforest,butthatwasnothismaingoal.Whattheblackwolfwantedmostwas
towatchtheforestfallintocompletechaos.Hekepttotheshadowsasheponderedhowhe
mightgoaboutachievingsuchaloftygoal.Spreadingchaosthroughouttheentireforestwould

notbeaneasytask.TheBlackWolfmadesuretostayoutofsightandoutofmind.Hewanted
hisnextattacktobeasurprize.
Asheroamedthroughthedeepestpartsoftheforest,hecameacrossafox.Hefound
theanimaltrottingalongsideastreamoneafternoon.Thewolfthoughtaboutkillingthisfoxfor
sport,asacreaturesuchasafoxmusteitherbelostorhaveadeathwishbeingthisdeepinthe
forest.Hecroucheddownandreadiedhimselfforattack.Butjustasthewolfwasaboutto
jumpoutandtakeholdofthefox,itturnedandlookeddirectlyathim.Thenitsmiledandsaid,
Ahthereyouare.Iknewyouwerecloseby.I'vebeenlookingforyoueversenseyou
lostyourfightwiththatotherwolf.
NoonespoketotheBlackWolfthisway.Atleastnoonewhowasstillalive.Hestepped
outfromwherehehadbeenhidingandaimedtointimidatethefoxbeforekillingit.

ADarkerShadeofWhite

SothefoxdisguisedtheBlackWolfbyturninghimwhite.Hetookallthedarknessfrom
thewolfsfuruntilitfadedtothesamepalecolorastheWhiteWolfs.Normally,thishideous
disguisewouldhaveinfuriatedtheBlackWolf.Hewasactuallysurprisedandconcernedthat
hisdarknesscouldsoeasilybetakenaway,butthisnewwhitecoatmadehimlookjustlikehis
enemyandbecauseofFox'splan,helovedit.Despitethis,hestillwantedtoknowwhatwould
becomeofhisdarkness.
Whatwillyoudowithit?Heaskedjustafterthefoxfinishedremovingitfromhiscoat.
Ohyoullhaveitbackwhenthisisallover,butuntilthenIllbeneedingtoborrowit.

envyandhateboilingupinsidehim.Hejustwantedtokillhisenemy.Riphisthroatoutand
blastfearintotheheartsofallanimals.Buthatredwouldhavetowait.Therewouldbeplentyof
itinthefuture.Fornow,hewouldhalftomakeagoodfirstimpression.Heranthroughthe
thingsFoxhadtaughthiminhismind.Whathewassupposedtosay,supposedtodo,
supposedtomakethemthink,makethembelieve.Heglancedbackathisnewlywhitefur,gave
achuckleathowpureitlooked,andheadedofftointroducehimselftothepack.

AFriendlyLoner

WhentheBlackWolfcametothepack,theywereimmediatelycurious.Thewolves
smelledhimandadmiredhiswhitecoat,andmostcautiousofallwasthetrueWhiteWolfe.He
wascautiousatfirstbecausehedidnotknowwherethisstrangewolfcamefrom,butaftera
time,theWhiteWolfwouldcometobefriendthisstrangeloner.Somethingaboutthisnew
animalmadeeveryonefeelgood,feelpowerful.TheWhiteWolfquestionedthefriendlyloner
whenhefirstarrived.Heinterruptedtheswarmofhispackaroundthenewcomertofindout
whohewas.
Wheredoyoucomefrom?
OhIcomefromeverywhere.ForyearsIvebeenalonewolf,andnowImjustlooking
foragrouptobelongto.TheWhiteWolfstudiedthelonerforamoment.Hehadtakenthe
timetohideandwatchhispackconversewiththeanimalandhesawnothreatinhim.Hewas
friendlyandveryoutgoing.
Alright,TheWhiteWolfsaid,youllbeanomegaforthetimebeing.
TheBlackWolfgavealittlesmilethatwasmeanttobealookofapproval.Foxsaidthis
mighthappen.Ifyoucan,hehadtoldthewolf,beanomega.Iknowitsnotreallyyourstyle
butbeingusedforentertainmentinthepackwillhelpyoucarryouttheplan.Sohewasan
omega,andhewouldactlikeone,andfitinlikeone.Hewouldentertainthepackandatthe
sametime,destroythemfromtheinside,andthebestpart,noonewouldseeitcoming.The
evilhewasgoingtospreadthroughoutthepackwouldslippasteventheeyesoftheirfearless
whiteleaderwhowas,afterall,theonewhowouldhopefullyfallhardest.

SelfDestruct

ThepacklovedtheBlackWolf.Hewassoadventurousandboldandhedidn't
stayanomegaforlong.Itwasclearthathewasmore.Beforehewasallowedtohunt
withthepack,heentertainedthemwithstoriesabouthispastlife.Theliethatthedark
creaturetoldthemaboutwherehecamefromwasthathehelpedoverthrowapack
leader.Hedidn'tstartwiththisstory,firsthetoldthemabouthislonewolfadventures,

hewassuchagoodstoryteller.Thewolftoldthemofgloriousbattleshefoughtwith
othercreatures,mostlywolves.
Whenthetimewasrightandthepackstartedbelievinghistalesofbattle,he
introducedanewconcepttothem.Revolution.Thestorywasabouthisoldpack.He
toldthemhowheandonlyoneotherwolfewereabletooverthrowtheirleader,whowas
asickwolfewhokilledandatethepups.Itwasallalieofcoursebuttheybelievedit.
TheBlackWolfwassatisfiedathoweasyitwastogetthesefoolstohateauthority.He
usedthesetypesofstoriestomakethemallquestionleadership,secretlyinstallinga
suspicionofauthorityinthem,andnoonenoticedit.
Asthewolfecontinued,hisstoriesbecamebolder.Hetoldthemhowhewas
abletofightoffbaresandevanonceamountainlion.Nowolfcouldfightoffamountain
lion,yettheybelievedhim.Allthiswasaslowprocess.IttookyearsfortheBlackWolf
tostartmakingboldstoriesandtelltalesofmajorrevolution,butifyoustillthinkthese
wolvesarefoolish,gowatchamovie.Listentoasong.
AstheBlackWolffilledthemindsofthepackwithideasofpowerand
independencehestillmadesurethathadthemquestioningleadership.Becauseofthis,
thewolvesofthepackbeganlookingtotheirleaderwithsuspicion.Sometimeswhenhe
gaveanorderormadeamovetheywouldargueandfighthim.AftertheWhiteWolf
assertedhisdominanceagainstapackmember,hewouldturntoseethedisapproving
facesofeveryoneelse.Theytalkedamongstthemselvesabouthisdecisionsand
startedtofocusoneverythinghewasdoingwrong.
ThisallpleasedtheBlackWolf,buttherewasstillworktodo.Heneededto
befriendtheWhiteWolfandinstillthesamerebelliousspiritinhim.Thesameonehe
hadbeenfeedingthepack.SohebecameclosetotheWhiteWolf.Thetwoofthem
hadnoproblemconnectingbecausetheBlackWolfhadbecomeaccustomedto
mirroringthepersonalitiesofothers.Hefoundoutwhathisenemyliked,whathedid
not,andwhatqualitieshewouldneedtobefriendhim.Witharighteousattitudeand
falsebravery,theBlackWolfquicklybecamegoodfriendswiththeWhiteWolf.
Theonlythingkeepinghimfromgoingmadandrippingthewhitefromhisfurwas
theintelligenceofthisplan.ThedarkcreaturehattedactingliketheWhiteWolf.Being
goodwassoboring,butheknewitwouldallpayoff.Heknewthathewasfeedinghis
enemycourage,inspiration,andalustforbattlethatwoulddestroyhimintheend.The
ideaofthisgavetheBlackWolfstrengthandhepushedon,sneakinghisevilintothe
mindsofeveryone.

Chapter5
APerfectEnemy

Alltherebelliouswolvesstilllivedinsomeformoforder,butitwasnotthesame.There
wasnowahiddensenseofrageintheairthatonlytheBlackWolfreallyknewabout.There
wasanewsenseofadventureandaneedtooverthrowsomethinginthewolves,yettheydidn't
knowaboutit.ButtheBlackWolfknew.Heknewthathehadjustcreatedanarmy.Abattle
squadthatwasdoomedtofailforeveryonefeltthatintheeventofchaostheyweretheonlyone

whocouldriseaboveitall,andanarmywhereeveryone'stheleaderwillcertainlyfall.Butall
theserebelsneededsomethingtooverthrow.Theyneededanenemy,andthatswhereFox
camein.HewastheperfectenemyandtheBlackWolfwouldmakethepackhatehim,but
Foxsintroductioncouldnotberevealeduntiltherewasabsolutecertaintythatthepackwas
blindwithanurgetofight,tooverthrow,toriseabovethechaos.
Intheblackofonemoonlessnight,theDarkWolfleftthepackandtooktheriskof
meetingFox.Whenhefoundhisalliedeepintheforesthealmostfeltenvious.

SparkingtheFire
FourdayspassedscensetheDarkWolfandFoxhadmetandthewolfnowwaitedto
seewhatFoxwoulddotogettheattentionofthepack.Onthefourthafternoon,ithappened.
Afterjustwakingup,theWhiteanddisguisedBlackWolflayoutsideadenmakingconversation
whilesomeomegasplayednearby.Therestofthepackwasscatteredabouttheareanot
engaginginmuchactivity.
TheBlackWolfknewthatthefoxwascapableofmysteriousthings.Thingsthatno
animalshouldbeabletodo,unnaturalthings,butevenhewassurprisedatthefirstsignof

Foxespresence.ItcameintheformofayoungBeatawithchardfur,abrokenleg,andvarious
othergashesandbruises.ShecamestumblingoutoftheforestjustbelowwheretheWhiteand
Blackwolveswerelaying.TheBlackWolfallowedhisenemytoruntoherbeforehefollowed.
Shewaslyingonhersideexposingabrownflankthathadbeensingedgrayandwasnow
movingupanddownrapidlywithherbreath.Shesmelledofburningfurandalsoofburning
forest.Shecouldn'tspeak,notatfirst,andeveryonewantedtoknowwhodidthistoher.The
DarkWolfhadtohideasmilewhenhesawthatthepackwantedrevenge.Healmostfelta
senseofprideinthem,thekindofprideafarmerhaswhenhiscattlearefatandreadytobe
slaughtered.
TheBeatasleptrightthereonthegroundforabouttwohoursbeforeshefinallywoke
andwasabletotellwhathappened.Shespokeofafoxwhodancedintheflamesofburning
forest.Shesaidthathefoundtreeswherebirdsandsquirrelsdwelled,andhesetthemonfire,
thatheseemedtohavesuchpleasureinterrorizingalllivingthings.TheBeatalooked
genuinelyhorrifiedandwhenshewasfurtherquestioned,shesaidsomethingthatwould
ignitedthesparkthatwouldgrowintoaragingfire.AfirethatFoxandtheDarkWolfhadbuilt.
TheBeatatoldthepackthatthisfoxshehadseencametoher.Sheclaimedthatshefound
herselffrozenindeepterrorastheevilcreaturecompletelystoppedwhathewasdoingand
facedher.Foxsentthebeatawithamessagesayingthathewouldtakeovertheforestand
thatallwouldbowtohim.Everylivingthingwouldbeunderhiscontrolandanyonewhorefused
wouldbekilled.HetoldherthatheknewoftheWhiteWolf,andthatallthefreedominthe
woodswouldcometoanendwithhisrule.
TheBlackWolfcouldseenow.Heunderstoodthesignificanceofthisyoungwolf.She
wasnotsupposedtorebelliketheothers,butshewastomake

Foxsconquestwouldfail.Howtheyweretheresistanceandhetoldthemthattheywouldbea
partofagloriousrebellion.

ThewholepackwantedtotrackdownFoxbuttheBeatacouldnottravel.Atfirst,itwas
decidedthattwowolveswouldhavetostaywiththeinjuredBeataandtherestwouldgo.The
DarkWolfknewthatFoxesplanrequiredtheWhiteWolfalonebeforeanyoneelsewaskilledso
heusedpridetosingleouthisenemy.
YouandIwillgo.Hesaid,ThatwaytheBeatawillbeleftunderthecareofmostof
thepack,andifthereisanyrealthreatwiththisfoxthanwewillcomebackandgathereveryone

togofight.LookingstraightattherealWhiteWolfhesaid,Buttherecantbeanythingto
worryabout,onelittlefoxisnomatchforthetwoofus.
SensetheWhiteWolfwasnotbeingleftout,hehadnoproblemwiththisplan,butthe
restofthepackwasreluctantevenwhentheirleaderorderedthemalltostaybehind.Inthe
storiestheBlackWolftold,themaincharactersoftengainedasenseofadventureor
righteousnessbydisobeyingauthority.Hehadfedthepackthesetailsforyearsandhehoped
thatatleastoneofthemwouldtryandfollowhimandtheWhiteWolf.Asherwouldbeprepared
forthis.
Itwasn'tlongbeforethetwowolvescouldsmellcharredwood,andshortlyafterthey
followedthescent,theycameacrossagrayandblackgapinthetreesthatstretchedoffintothe
distance.Whatkindoffiredoesnotspreadbuttoonedirection?TheWhiteWolfwondered
whentheyfirstarrivedatthetrailofburntforest.Onethathasbeendirectedbyaninsane
animal,someonewithpowerdidthis.TheDarkWolfewaitedforareply,andwhattheWhite
Wolfesaidnextpleasedhim.YouandIwillendthisassoonaswefindthemonster.Sothey
setoffonceagain,thistimefollowingthegaping,chardtrailofincineratedforest.
Therewerenootheranimalshere.Theyhadallfledfarfromthetrailofash.Butthe
WhiteWolffeltnofear.Blindwithcourage,hepushedupthetrail,ratherthansneakingaround
it.Insteadofkeepingdistanceandobservingthecreaturethatmadethistrail,hemeantto
attackandkillbeforeunderstanding.Thisiswhathehadbeenfedforyears,andwhenthetrail
curvedbacktowardthepack'sterritory,theWhiteWolfbecameinfuriatedandbegantomove
evenfaster.
Beforethecurveendedtherewassmokeintheairandnotlongafterthecurveended,
therewasashfallinglikelightsnowflakes,andnotlongafterthattherewasfire,andinthefire
therewasablackfox.

followedthemoutlookingforanadventure.Hewasalwaysaspiritedoutcast,alosthero
destinedtoriseupintimeofneed.Foxlookedguiltyaseversittingnexttothebody,and
somehowheworetheguiltwithprideasiftorubitintheWhiteWolfsfacethathehadkilled,or
wasresponsiblefor,thedeathoftheOmega.

Thetwoofthemhadcometoanagreementearlyonastowhattheobjectivewas.SeeFox

telleveryonehowtolive.Theysimplywantedtowatchitburn,andwiththeWhiteWolfdead
thisideaofeverythingfallingintocompletechaoswasnowmucheasiertomakeareality.And
whentheforeststartedshowingsignsofrebuildingorder,theywouldbethere.Theywould
playasleaders.Theywouldhelprebuild.Thentheywouldthroweverythingbackintoflames
andchaossothatnoonewouldevertrustleadershipagainandchaoscouldbesustained.Allit
