Social Studies 7 Spring 2014

Facebook: Louis Riel edition assignment

Due: October 14, 2014
Worth: 10% of final grade
PURPOSE:
The purpose of this assignment is to create a Facebook wall OR photo album for Louis Riel
that shows how the Red River Mtis played a part in the development of western Canada.
TASK:
Create a Facebook page or photo album for Louis Riel using the following guidelines:
The Wall
Write 12 significant facts on the wall. These facts need to highlight important events that
happened before, during and after the Red River Resistance in 1869 and the second Mtis
uprising in 1885. Each comment should be about a separate event and include the date, even if
its approximate. The comment can be from Riel or from someone on his friends list. (Riel has 6
Facebook friends.) Everyone must comment at least once.
The Photo Album
Create 8 photos that show significant events. These facts need to highlight important
events that happened before, during and after the Red River Resistance in 1869 and the second
Mtis uprising in 1885. Each photo should be about a separate event. Below each photo write
who is pictured and what is happening, as well as the date, even if its approximate. Riels six
Facebook friends should appear in at least one photo. His friends do not have to appear in
the same photo.
Note: The album photo will be original, hand-drawn or computer-created. Cut-andpaste photos from the Internet are not acceptable.
In your wall posts and photos, consider the following:
The Mtis, First Nations, French and British perspectives on the events that led to the
establishment of Manitoba,
How the creation of Manitoba was an attempt to achieve compromise between the Mtis, First
Nations, French and British peoples, and
How the Government of Canadas response to the Red River Resistance and the second Metis
uprising helped Canada gain control of the West.
Words that may help inspire wall posts and photos:
assimilation
compromise
Manitoba Act
migration
settlement
Use the information in your written notes and timeline created in class, and gathered during
class discussions to help you create the wall posts or photo album. Example pages are attached.
* Helpful hint: When the wall or photo album is complete, use the above guidelines as a
Checklist for Content to help you know if you have included all of the necessary information.
Please note: The Facebook pages will be used in a follow-up assignment next week with your
classmates.
FORMAT:
You will have 3 social studies classes to complete the research and construction of the Facebook
wall or photo album. Use one of the paper templates to complete your research before you begin
constructing the final copy of your page.
Electronic templates have been emailed to you. You may use Word or any other program that
you are familiar with. While you are working on your page, you may save it to your flash drive or
your H: drive.

If you prefer to complete your assignment on a paper template, friends photos are available
along with glue and scissors. Use one paper template to complete your research and use the
second template for the final, good copy that you hand in.
EVAULATION:
The assignment will be graded according to the following rubric:

Whats on your mind?

SPOILER ALERT! Canada had 916 men and the Metis had 250 so,
yeah, Canada won the Battle of Batoche. I guess all thats left to do is for me to
surrender. I wonder what this means for the provisional government?

Poundmaker (Pitikwahanapiwiyn) to Louis Riel

Word at Batoche is
that many Anglophone Metis and white settlers want to stay neutral. Dont worry,
buddy. I got your back!

Happy to have Manitoba part of

Canada! Ill try to get those land grants done for the Metis, but trying to convince
the British to send a military expedition to your province is taking a lot longer than I
thought. #sorrynotsorry
