Zamperini Journey with Algebra

Instructions: Follow each step closely to get the correct measurements and outcomes. Do not
skip ahead, but follow in a strict list. Assume any point is on the graph exactly at an intersection
even if you need to move this to the nearest line. Write answers on graph and on the paper where
appropriate.
Note: Assume that the map is flat and neglect the curvature of planet earth. Measurements will
not be exact, but will give you a close estimate. Use the map with a grid for this assignment.
The point (0, 0) is at Funafuti where Zamperini was stationed in the Pacific. Use the map from
yesterday as a reference on some of the lines that have been created.

1) Draw the following lines on the graph: Funafuti to the crash site (FX), the crash site to
Torrance (XT), the crash site to Kwajalein (XK), Funafuti to Kwajalein (KF), Funafuti to
Torrance (FT), the bisector line (XI) also extend this line further down as well, Funafuti
to Ofuna/Omori (FO), Torrance to Ofuna/Omori (TO), Kwajalein to Ofuna/Omori (KO),
Kwajalein to Oahu (KH), and the crash site to Oahu, HI (XH)
2) Find the equation for the line from Funafuti to the crash site (FX).

3) Find the equation for the line the crash site to Torrance (XT).

4) Find the equation for the line the crash site to Kwajalein (XK).

5) Find the equation for the line Funafuti to Kwajalein (KF).

6) Find the equation for the line Funafuti to Torrance (FT).

7) Find the equation for the line the bisector line (XI).

8) Find the equation for the line Funafuti to Ofuna/Omori (FO).

9) Find the equation for the line Torrance to Ofuna/Omori (TO).

10) Find the equation for the line Kwajalein to Ofuna/Omori (KO).

11) Find the equation for the line Kwajalein to Oahu (KH).

12) Find the equation for the line and the crash site to Oahu, HI (XH).

13) Draw a square thats coordinates (0, 0) (1, 0) (1, 1) (0, 1). List the coordinates below of
the crash site. Translate the square to put on top of the site of the crash and list the
movements from the translation below.

14) To the left of the square, draw a triangle with a base of 1 unit with a height of 2 units. In
the space below, list the coordinates of the triangle. Translate the triangle to put on top of
the site of Kwajalein and list the movements from the translation below. Rotate triangle
90 counterclockwise once at Kwajalein and put the new coordinates below.

15) To the left of the triangle, draw an eight sided figure (must connect and be an irregular
shape). List the coordinates of this shape below. Translate the eight sided figure to the
Ofuna/Omori to put the shape on top of the site of that site and list the movements from
the translation below.

16) Reflective this shape over the y-axis. Write the new coordinates below.

17) To the right of the eight sided figure, draw a rectangle with a base of 3 and a height of 5
units. List the coordinates of the rectangle below. Translate the rectangle to put on top of
the site of Torrance, CA and list the movements from the translation below with the new
coordinates.

You have now completed the journey of Louis Zamperini by translating these shapes
across the map.
18) What is the total distance of the translations? (Hint: Do each translation separately)
