1. Autoimmunity
a. Aetio-pathogenesis: Immunological Tolerance and loss there of
b. New antigens, alteration of previous antigens, release of previously sequestered antigens.
c. Features of autoimmune disorders: females, remissions, joint/muscle involvement, low-grade fever, Hyperglobulinaemia, elevated
ESR.
d. Some autoimmune disorders: Graves disease, Hashimotos thyroiditis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Systemic Lupus Erythematosus,
Polymyositis, Dermatomyositis, Scleroderma (Systemic Sclerosis), Pernicious Anaemia, Autoimmune Hepatitis, Acute
Glomerulonephritis, Goodpastures syndrome, Acute Rheumatic Fever, Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus, Multiple sclerosis, Myasthenia
gravis, Sjogrens syndrome, Ulcerative colitis, Crohns disease.
e. Tests for autoantibodies: Antinuclear factor/Antibody (ANA), Rheumatoid factor, others
f. Plasmapheresis

1. Students should be able to explain what are autoimmune diseases and how they develop.
2. Students should be able to describe the mechanisms which result in the autoimmune diseases outlined above.
3. They should be able to recommend treatment with associated logical reasoning
Initiation [How will you help students connect with the previous lesson and/or their prior knowledge? How will you gain their interest in the lesson?]
The lesson will start with a discussion on the effect of Corticosteroids (a treatment option for autoimmune diseases) administration on infections.
Procedures ([List the activities that the students will participate in to facilitate their learning.]
1. In class clinical case discussions using familiar cases to for each hypersensitivity reaction
2. Questions will be shared on google circle in which each student will have to add their comment, comments will contribute to their course work grade.
Closure [How will you cause students to reflect on what they have learned?]
Lecture will conclude with digital flash cards; these will give students a chance to predict the type of autoimmune diseases based on the picture or questions on
the card.
Assessment of Student Learning [How will you determine whether the objectives were met?]
1. Questions will be shared on google circle in which each student will have to add their comment, comments will contribute to their course work grade
2. Online course test in a controlled environment at week 6
Strategies for Technology Integration [How will you integrate technology use in this lesson in order to enhance the learning experience of your students?]
Microsoft power point will be used as the major presentation tool, google drive will be used to share presentations while giving students the ability to comment
on posted materials. Google sharing option will be used to share you tube videos with material relevant to the course. Microsoft power point will also be used as
a tool to generate animations to explain processes
