EXPERIMENT 4 : STUDY OF LINEAR SYSTEMS USING CONTROL SYSTEMS TRAINER

KITS

AIM
1. To simulate various models of linear systems, study and analyze their
time response characteristics with the help of Trainer kits.
2. Stability analysis of the given by varying the process gain.
3. To study PID controller characteristics of the first , second order
systems
FACLITIES REQUIRED
The following trainer kits are required
1. Simulation of Transfer Function VSTF-01
2. Stability analysis of Linear Systems VPCS -04
3. Process control Simulator PCS -01
SIMULATION PROBLEM 1
SIMULATION OF TRANSFER FUNCTION USING VSTF 01
The simulated process is a unity feedback system made up of a open loop
transfer function made up of two cascaded first order system given by 10/
(s+10) with a variable Gain K.
1. Calculate the value of K when the steady state error is 0.2
2. Design the value of K for a overshoot of 20%. For this value of K what
is the settling time.

PROCEDURE
1. Patch the connections in the front panel as given in Fig.
2. Switch ON the supply to the unit.

3. Square wave at amplitude 1Vpp is given as a step input to the system at

100Hz frequency.
4. Adjust the value of proportional gain such that there is a sustained
oscillation for each step input.
5. From the peak overshoot and rise time and the steady state gain compute
the values of n and from which the transfer function of the system can be
deduced.

SIMULATION PROBLEM 2: For a given open loop transfer function K/s(s+1)

(s+2.217) with unity feedback, i) draw the root locus and find the values of K
when the system becomes purely oscillatory. ii) Values of K for which the
system is unstable. Iii) The value of K for which the peaks overshoot is 50% .
Verify the results using the simulator VPCS 04.
STABILITY ANALYSIS OF A LINEAR SYSTEM VPCS - 04

EXPERIMENT
AIM
To analyze the system stability and verify using Root locus method.
Apparatus Required
1. VPCS - 04 unit.
2. Patch chord.
3. DSO
Procedure
1. Connections are made as per the mimic diagram.
2. Set the voltage as a step input of the error detector.
3. Make the gain as unity and see the system response in DSO.
4. Vary the gain and absorb the system response at unstable condition.
5. Verify the gain, at unstable condition by root locus method.

SIMULATION PROBLEM 3.

The open loop transfer function of a unity

feedback control process is K*106/(s+1000)2

PROCESS CONTROL SIMULATOR PCS 01
AIM
To study the response of P + I + D Controller in a process given by the above transfer function.
PROCEDURE
i. Connections are made as per the connection diagram shown in figure
ii. Set the process fast / slow switch (SW4) and controller fast / slow switch (SW3) in fast
position.
iii. Apply a square wave of 2VP-P at around 50Hz.
iv. Now patch I and I' and adjust the integral time until the steady state deviation is zero.
v. Now note down the number of overshoots before the system settles.
vi. Now connect D and D' and slowly increase the derivative time and note down the effect
of this system response.
vii. Observe the response and calculate the Proportional Band (PB), Integral time (Ti), Rise
