Supporting the youth in positive gardening ways
Permaculture Hand, Feedback Organic, Pete the Urban Farmer and Trees In
Newcastle are working together to offer schools garden educational packages
designed to assist people in learning how to grow food and look after the
environment. We believe that learning how to grow food is one of the most
important steps towards a wholesome and fulfilling life. Gardening also
comes with many other learning and health development benefits, such as:

Connecting with nature

Understanding where food comes from and the effort required
Teaches you about the environment, sustainability and resource management
Learn to appreciate a healthy diet and lifestyle
Gain physical exercise and hands-on achievements
Raising ones self-esteem and positive attitude

Builds ones social and moral skills, as well as team work and community strengths

Engage students in the learning and to cater for all learning styles

Touching dirt is also said to have physical-biological benefits

See Garden-Based Learning for more information: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gardenbased_learning

We fit in with you

Permaculture Hand has standard workshops they offer (see overleaf) but can
customize as needed. We also understand that teachers and school staff find it
extremely hard to find the time to incorporate environmental and gardening
topics into a lesson plan. Thats where we can assist wherever you see fit.
Gardening can be very supportive with many topics such as the environment,
biology, farming, science, weather, ecology, sustainability, nutrition, health,
lifestyle, recycling, building, water harvesting, design, physical education,
teamwork, problem solving, leadership, social skills, aboriginal studies etc.
There are no requirements of you. We can supply aids and materials, but may
come as an extra cost. Ideally if you were to have a garden for us to do a
workshop in, however if not, we can make one for you and this too could be a
workshop and collaborative opportunity. We can also accommodate for special
needs and there are no prior knowledge of the teacher or kids.

Garden Workshops
An example of some topics that can be catered or altered to your situation. Run
time can be anywhere between 1-2+ hours. We are happy to provide any other
gardening workshop on request. An example of how garden-based education
can be incorporated into the curriculum is provided on the following page.

Grants
We are always on the lookout for grants, and as soon as we come across one we
will let you know.

Support
We are really into ongoing support and believe that one of the key factors for
successful garden is how and who will keep it running. By getting as many
people on board including other parents, community volunteers and the schools
grounds man or maintenance man can help a lot with keeping things in check
and up and running. We are willing to help maintain the garden but think its best
if people associated with the school do so. Our designs do take into account
these maintenance issues, so by using these services you will get a garden that
not only survive, but thrive. Please contact us for more information regarding
wanting consultant, design or implementation services.
By being a school member of Trees In Newcastle, you also receive a sign and
access to discounted plants via TIN's Public fund. See their website for more
information.
