PREFACE
The twin arts of Typewriting and Shorthand are still having maximum popularity though computer
technology has occupied the modern world, in view of their advantages in providing job opportunities and also
creating lot of saving to the top managers. Keeping in view the importance of twin arts, the State Board of
Technical Education and Training, A.P., after its formation in 1984 have streamlined the entire examination system
of twin arts and revised the age old system on scientific approach considering the stroke system for counting
words. The Board also has consulted the experts both from the Typewriting Institutes and from the Government
offices and standardized the formats for the Typewriting which were published for the use for the beginners.
The revised syllabus was in existence for the last 6 years. Keeping in view the education policy of the
Government to revise the syllabus for every five years and also in view of the need of the business and
Government Offices and the time factor, the State Board of Technical Education and Training deputed Senior
Officers of the Board to study the present pattern of syllabus and examination in neighbouring States and also
appointed Expert Committee with senior Examiners, Academicians and Principals of Typewriting Institutes to
examine the report submitted by the study team and propose revision in the existing system of typewriting and
shorthand in all languages and grades. The committee after detail deliberations felt that the existing syllabus in
most of the examinations can be continued without much change as it was done more systematically and
satisfactorily. However, to avoid duplication of examination to the candidates, it suggested the following.
a) Reducing the time of II Paper of Typewriting examination in all languages by 30 minutes avoiding one
question of manuscript which is already tested in other questions.
b) To change the objective type of mechanism questions to short answer type of questions to assess
correctly the knowledge of the candidate in the subject.
c) In case of Shorthand Higher in Telugu and English the numbers of papers were reduced to two by
clubbing II and II papers in one paper.
Accordingly the expert committee has finalized the draft syllabus and the same has been approved by
the Board for implementation with effect from June/July, 1996 examination.
The Board has put in more efforts to keep the standard of examination high while keeping the
demand for the pass-outs of Typewriting and Shorthand examinations through the Board.
I feel that the revised syllabus will be of much use and beneficial to students, business and
Government Offices.
