Thursday Memo To: Kettering Board of Education Dr. James Schoenlcin, Superintendent CC: Treasurer’s Office Staff, Administrative staff, Mike Bock From: Steve Clark, Treasurer Date: May 6, 2010 According to the Columbus Dispatch, statewide, voters approved 56 percent of the 175 school levies on Tuesday's ballot. That's a drop from last year's primary election, when 68 percent of school issues passed, Still, educators say it's not bad considering a higher- than-usual number of requests for new taxes, which traditionally are more difficult to pass than renewal levies. Sixty percent of the levies were for new tax revenue. About a third passed, the primary also featured a large number of income-tax requests, an alternative some school officials hoped would be more appealing to voters concerned about the recession and high unemployment. Of the 33 income tax requests, voters approved 20. My scan of OSBA’s website indicated that 100 of those levy requests were some type of operating property tax levy. Forty-two were as high as or higher than our 6.9 mill operating levy, the highest being Middletown’s (Butler County) 18.78 levy, but I believe that was a conversion levy. Quite a few of those 6.9 mill and higher levies passed, such as Brookville (8.5 mills), Campbell (Mahoning County) 12 mills, Delaware (Delaware County) 12.8 mills, Franklin (Warren County) 8.9 mills, Reynoldsburg (Franklin County), Health City (Licking County) and Shaker Heights (Cuyahoga County), 9.9 mills, Miamisburg (Montgomery County) 7.33 mills, and Lucas Local (Putnam County) 13 mills. Yellow Springs even passed 8.7 mills. According to the Dayton Daily News, the Dayton Tea Party members take credit for defeating the Kettering levy: (Rob) Scott said area Tea Party supporters succeeded in a few area races—the defeat of Kettering City Schools 6.9 mill levy, which they actively opposed... © The Kettering City School District hereby retains the profit rights ftom this document.
