Typhoon Yolanda: A Record-Breaker

"Big trials come to those who can handle it." This quote is best
to describe all who suffered from typhoon Yolanda. About 4:40
A.M. of November 8,2013, the deadliest Philippine typhoon in the
modern history, typhoon Yolanda struck the Philippines
specifically Eastern Samar.
Ladies and gentlemen I will discuss about the truth about the
destructive typhoon Haiyan also known as typhoon Yolanda. The
said typhoon is known to be one of the most terrifying tragedy in
the history of the Philippines. Ive been very interested all about
typhoon Yolanda which alarmed not just the Philippines but the
whole world. I read articles about it and watched news about the
calamity. First, Im going to talk details about super typhoon
Haiyan. Next, Ill discuss its effects to the Filipinos. Lastly, Im
going to talk about how they had been recovering from the
terrifying experience.
Typhoon Yolanda is one of the most terrifying tragedies in the
history of the Philippines. When it reached the zone of
responsibility of the Philippines, its comparable to a strong
Category 4 hurricane in the U.S. , nearly in the top, a 5. The
typhoon had sustained winds of 235 km. per hour with gusts of
275 kph. It has a diameter of 600 km which made it hard for the
people to evacuate to higher ground and the waves were as high
as 15 meters.
The devastating typhoon also reached other countries
around Asia. It struck Palau and damaged several houses and
downed trees but no fatalities or major injuries in the island. It
also reached Hainan Province in Taiwan where six people were
killed. In Vietnam, ten people were killed while they were
preparing for Haiyan's landfall, while no one was killed after the
system made landfall, however 4 people are missing.

Ive already discussed details about super typhoon Yolanda, I

will now discuss how it became a historical storm. Because of
typhoon Yolanda, Pres. Philippine president Benigno Aquino III
declared state of calamity over some islands in Visayas. Some 9.8
million people have been affected by the typhoon and at least
10,000 people died. Dead bodies were found almost everywhere.
Confirmed by the Provincial disaster officer, three hundred people
in the town Basey, Samar. The authority are still searching for
more than a thousand people missing since the said tragedy. Just
this November 8, 2 years after the typhoon, three bodies of
possible Yolanda victims were found in Barangay 87, Tacloban
City and it isnt the first time that the people in the city found
remains speculated Haiyan victims. In the year 2015 alone, they
found 20 bodies and more than 100 bodies from 2013-2014.
The NDRRMC said the damage to property caused by
Yolanda now stands at about P90 billion. About 1.1 million
houses were destroyed. An estimated 5.9 million workers lost
their jobs because of infrastructure damage, lack of market
access etc. According to DoH, it caused $16 million worth of
damage to 571 health facilities. The typhoon left 5.6 million
people in need of food assistance and 80 municipalities with
scarce supply of drinking water.
Lastly, now that you all know why Yolanda became historical to
all Filipinos in terms of destruction, I will discuss how the victims
are recovering and those who helped them to. Until now, the
survivors are still trying to adapt the lives they are to live after
the typhoon. They received many donations from a lot of people
around the globe. Many celebrities gave help. International
personalities such Justin Bieber gave $20 million, and Arnel
Pinedas group, Journey, $350 thousand. Local artists like KC
Concepcion donated P10 million and Sharon Cuneta, P5 million.
Organizations such as the American Red Cross collected $11
million, Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation, over $12 million , Iglesia ni
Cristo gave free medical and dental check-ups and FIFA , $1
million. Many governments offered humanitarian help and

financial assistance. China gave $200 thousand, Australia, $9.4

million, U.K. $15million and many more countries helped in the
improvement of Eastern Samars improvement.
The help given made a very big improvement to Eastern
Samar. After two years, the government really gave much
attention to the survivors home. The DPWH constructed 286 km
of national roads, 1,117.64 m of national bridges and 77 out of
110 flood control projects were reconstructed. The DepED has
1,026 newly constructed classrooms, about 5,500 renovated
classrooms and some 122 thousand items of school furniture.
DSWD completed more than 2,000 projects for about four million
household beneficiaries from construction of new infrastructures
from the CDD approach of KALAHI-CIDSS. As of NIA, All 2,396
hectares with restored national irrigation systems. There are still
ongoing projects like construction of new roads and thousands of
schools.

I discussed the strength and routes of super typhoon

Yolanda first. Next, I enumerated the effects of the
typhoon to Eastern Samar. Lastly, I discussed about the
recovery of Yolanda survivors. The destructive visit of
typhoon Yolanda is one of the most memorable tragedies
in the history of the Philippines.
Truly, super typhoon Yolanda is a nightmare to all
especially Filipinos. However, it only proved the hopeful
spirits of Filipinos and the essence of generosity of the
people all over the world. There is are verses I would
never forget, Consider it pure joy whenever you face
trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of
your faith develops perseverance".
