Opinion and bias

Opinion- A view or judgement formed about something not necessarily
based on fact or knowledge.

Opinion and bias are important in factual documentaries, Its good to have
your own opinion as long as it goes along the morals of the public. Its hard
to have an opinion which stands out due to the fact documentaries are
broadcasted to a large audience and you cant offended anyone. Its also
important to look at more than one opinion to make sure that its not right
winged and bias. Loose change lies expressed a range of lies in the
documentary and had bias views on 9/11
In my documentary I made sure it had opinions of two different views, one
against giving the homeless spare change and one (which was my
opinion) which was to give spare change and help the homeless. I did this
so my documentary wouldnt be bias or one sided.
Accuracy
Accuracy- The quality or state of being correct or precise and the values
show of to the correct standard

In documentaries in general it is important that the information

broadcasted is accurate and figures are up to date therefore they are
close to the present figure of the time its broadcasted. For example in Fox
news Anna kooiman referenced a report that Obama offered to pay out of
pocket for a museum although this was untrue and came from a parody
website
In my documentary I checked various sources for my facts mentioned and
because they correlated it meant it meant the figures stated were close to
the true value
Balance and impartiality
Impartiality - Equal treatment of all rivals or disputants/fairness.
Balance- Something not one sided and something treated fairly and
evenly.

Its important in factual documentarys to have both sides of the story,

one showing the negatives and one showing the positives. Documentaries
dont have to be impartial however if you want to be partial you must
clearly show this to the view as it may come across that you are being
dishonest.
In my documentary I made sure my interviews were balanced, I did this by
have the same questions answered and both opinions were balanced as
there was an equal amount of for and against views. Also I made sure that
throughout my interview with the homeless man I showed what help he
gets by other people and also his tough times with the public.
Objective and subjectivity
Objective- something not influenced by peoples feelings or opinions in
considering and representing facts.

Its important in documentaries to be Objective as the documentary needs

to be as fair as possible however when you are partial to something being
subjective is good as it shows how you truly feel and it opens up you true
opinion.
In my documentary I made sure that I was Objective during my interviews
through the questions that I asked. I made sure the way I asked them was
not making them feel forced to say a certain opinion like mine. However in
the interview with the homeless man I made sure that I asked questions
for my own interest for people who shared my opinion. However the range
of questions I asked covered what people would ask if they had an
opposite view to make sure I was not being too subjective.
Access and Privacy
Privacy- A state in which one is not observed or disturbed by other people

In documentaries in general its important that any property or location

filmed in you are not invading anyones privacy or entering a place where
you dont have permission to film. In the industry this is important as large
fines and charges can be applied no matter how big your audience is. For
example all codes of practice give guidance related to the issue of privacy
on the use of recording telephone interviews, hidden microphones and
cameras, scenes of extreme suffering and distress, interviewing children,
set-up situations, interviews without prior arrangement (door stepping)
and video news releases.
In my documentary I filmed on Henley collages property which I was given
access to. For my interview in London I didnt film on private land it was
only on the side of a street
Contract to the Viewer
The unwritten rule that if a producer claims it will be a Factual program, it
must be 100% factual.

Any claims that are made must be absolutely true otherwise you are
breaking the contract to the viewer.
In my documentary I ensured that all the facts I stated were true in my
Factual Documentary the only time when I didnt express any facts was
in interviews which was required. Any facts stated by the homeless man
featured have to be seen that they my not be true and could be subjective
to the view.
