LE 4 PRACTICE PROBLEMS

AY 15-16 Sem 1

PROBLEM 1:

PROBLEM 4:

Two hanging
blocks A and B
having masses
of 4kg and 6kg
respectively
are attached
to a spring
with a stiffness of 40 N/m. At the instant shown, the
spring is compressed 0.3m. Determine the
maximum angles and of the 2m cables after the
blocks are released from rest and the spring
becomes unstretched.

A 2kg ball is thrown

horizontally
at
10m/s when it hits
the
6kg
block
moving down the
20o ramp at 1m/s.
Knowing that the
coefficient
of
restitution between
the ball and the block is 0.6 and the coefficient of
kinetic friction between the block and the ramp is
0.4, determine the following:
A. the speeds the ball and the block just after
impact;
B. the distance which B slides up the ramp
before it momentarily stops

PROBLEM 2:
A 4kg bullet travels horizontally with a velocity of
600 m/s before it separates into two pieces A and
B having a mass of 1.5kg and 2.5kg respectively. If
the bullet travels along the shown parabolic
trajectories, determine:
A. the magnitude of velocity of each piece just
after the explosion;
B. the horizontal distance where piece A strikes
the ground at C.

PROBLEM 5:
The 50kg drum has
an angular velocity
of 30rad/s when it is
in contact with the
horizontal surface at
C. If the coefficient of
kinetic friction is 0.2,
determine how long
it will take for the
cylinder to stop spinning. What force is developed in
link AB during this time? The axle through the drum
is connected to two symmetrical links.

PROBLEM 6:
PROBLEM 3:
Block A having a mass of 2kg slides with a velocity of
2m/s into block B. Block B has a mass of 3kg and
rests on top of a thin plate P that has a mass of 3kg.
The coefficients of kinetic friction between the boxes
and the plate is 0.2 and that of the plate and the floor
is 0.1 while the coefficient of static friction between
the plate and the floor is 0.12. Determine the
following:
A. the distance the plate moves before it stops
sliding;
B. the time after impact when all motion stops

The uniform 6kg slender rod AB is given a slight

horizontal disturbance when it is in the vertical
position and rotates about B without slipping.
Consequently,
it
strikes the step at C.
The
impact
is
perfectly
plastic
hence the rod rotates
about
C
without
slipping after the
impact.
Determine
the angular velocity of
the rod when it is in
the
horizontal
position shown.

The only limit to your IMPACT is your imagination and commitment.
