Deadline: Nov 6 - Fri (5:00 PM) MH102 PIGEONHOLE
General Instructions:
1. Answer the following questions on A4-sized papers (preferably recycled). Only one side of every sheet should
be used to write your solutions to the problems. MAXIMUM of 1 problem in every sheet. Follow exam protocol
on what details shall be written on the paper. BOX or ENCIRCLE your final answers ONLY.
2. At the TOPMOST portion of the first page of your answer sheets, write the following (and affix your signature):

I hereby certify that I have worked on this problem set by my own honest effort, without giving or receiving
any inappropriate help. I understand that any evidence which contradicts the foregoing statement may be used
against me, and I am prepared for the ensuing consequences thereof.
3. Late submissions will NOT be accepted.

PROBLEM 1
A 2-kg block is held at rest against a spring (k = 2000N/m, Lundeformed = 1 m) that is initially
compressed at point A. Once the block is released, it will move along the frictionless track shown until
it is deposited on the conveyor belt at D.

a) Determine the speed of the block at point B such that the block reaches the conveyor belt at
D.
b) Determine the minimum amount of compression of the spring at Position A so that the
block reaches the conveyor belt at D.
c) Determine the normal force acting on the block when it reaches point C.

PROBLEM 2
Three identical rods with various lengths are connected as shown in the figure. They each have equal
masses of 0.5 kg. If the system is released from rest in the position shown,
a) Determine the initial angular acceleration of bar GI
b) Determine the initial angular acceleration of bar IA
c) Determine the initial angular acceleration of bar AN

PROBLEM 3
A thin disk G weighing 10 kg and of radius 0.5 m rolls without slipping on a circular path of
radius 3 m. The coefficient of static and kinetic friction of the surface are 0.25 and 0.15,
respectively. The disk is released from rest at Position 1 shown in the figure. A spring with
undeformed length 2 m and spring constant 20 N/m is attached to a point A which is along the
circumference
of the disk.
Position
2
describes
the
instant when G
is
directly
below
C.
Position 3 is
the
farthest
point that the
disk can reach.

a) Determine the change in elevation h from Position 1 to Position 2.
b) Determine the angular velocity and velocity of the disk at Position 2.
If the spring at Position 3 makes an angle of 65 from Position 2,
c)
d)
e)
f)

Determine the length of the spring at Position 3.

Determine the farthest distance d that the disk can reach.
Draw the FBD and EFD of the disk at Position 3.
Determine the angular acceleration and acceleration at Position 3.

PROBLEM 4
Identical rods each of mass m and length are linked to form the mechanism shown below.
The rods are pin connected at Y while end X is supported by a pin and end Z can slide freely in the
frictionless horizontal opening. If end Z is jerked to the left and then suddenly released,

a)
Determine the velocity of end Z when
it is directly below end X
b)
Determine the velocity of end Z when
rod XY is vertical

BONUS PROBLEM:
Look for a video of a unique Rube Goldberg machine (a contraption, invention, device or
apparatus that is deliberately over-engineered to perform a simple task in a complicated
fashion, usually including a chain reaction). Just write down the link of the video in your
answer sheet and explain in 3-5 sentences only what the contraption is all about, what
makes it unique and worthy of a 20% bonus! [NOT ALL WILL RECEIVE THE BONUS
POINTS]
