Statement of intent By Ruby Lucas

I believe I have acquired a variety of skills and knowledge since

starting my art foundation .I have began to understand the
theoretical side of art when researching feminism and Marxism in
relation to the historical and contemporary practice of art. As well as
gaining practical skills including being able to create films, photos
and installations as well as using recycled goods in my work , I have
began to understand that my personal practice has a strong
theoretical back bone which stems from my interest in cultural and
social studies.
I choose to specialise in fine art because I have a huge interest in
film and photography and making installations. I enjoy the fine art
practice opposed to media because it enables me to explore and be
a lot more courageous in my decisions because its so free .I also
enjoy not working against a brief which has allowed me to explore a
variety of issues in my artistic practice in a very short time scale. I
liked the possibility that I can make a variety of work including
drawing and working in 3D as well as pursuing my love for film and
photography. I have explored this in my most recent piece in which I
drew a variety of faces and placed them in a 3D box full of different
objects .I would love to explore some more larger scale 3D work in
my FMP but combine this with my film and photography to create
one piece.
Im very interested in studying the concept of colour physiology and
symbolism as well as mental health in my project. This stems from
my interest is phycology ,colour and mental health .I want to study
the way in which colour can effect the audience and the way
feelings are associated with colour. This will give me the
opportunity to learn about the physiological association with colour
as well as allowing me to explore colour in a large array of mediums
such as threw photos and painting. When exploring mental health I
want to gather information from other people about what colours
they think reflect each diagnosis and use this idea to direct my work
and final outcome. This idea relates to my chosen discipline of fine
art as it allows me to explore a variety of broad ideas, as a fine artist
I have strong intent in relation to my work and I aim to make the
audience feel a certain way depending on there personal association
or ideas on the work . I hope to develop an understanding on my
chosen area of study as well as learning how to create a successful
volume of research and use this information to lead my creative
work. I will undergo research by making surveys to ask the general
public on there association with colours and illness. I will visit the
welcome collection to look at exibitions that include elements of
science and art. I will read the book Colour Theory: An Essential
Guide to Colour as well as Lighter than my shadow by Katie green.
In addition to exploring other artist who have created a collection of
work with similar intent or outcome. In terms of my creative process

I will use a range of techniques including still photography ,moving

image and installations .I also plan to paint a space and
incorporating some performance art in this space. I will need a
camera, recycled material, a projector ,a space to paint and
resources to paint.
I am going to keep a diary on my blog and update my blog every
afternoon during the next few weeks ,Im going to update my blog
after gallery visits and college as well as when I have new ideas for
my body of work. My criteria for success will include gathering a
volume of research, making lots of work and experimenting with
ideas ,making sure Im always visiting galleries to remain inspired. I
will keep track on my blog of predictions of possible set backs with a
plan on how to actively approach resolving these problems, I will
talk to my tutors and friends to see if I can get external ideas on
how to deal with set backs.
