What went well? What did not go well? (Cite specific examples)
The students began by watching a Bill Nye video about the water
cycle. After this I asked the students to look around the room to see
if they can find evidence of the water cycle. They noticed a boiling
pot of water. We then walked over and each student got to observe
how the steam from the water condensates on the cupboard. The
students then noticed that as enough water accumulated on the
cupboard that it began to rain. Having students observe this really
helped them further their understanding of how the water cycle
works. After this the students then created their own water cycle in
a bottle. During this time students used boiling water, a cup of ice,
hand lenses, the App Mag Free (magnification) and graphic
organizers on their Ipads (Doodle Buddy) to further explore how the
water cycle works. This gave students the opportunity to fully
understand how evaporation, condensation, precipitation, and
accumulation happens. See pictures below:
Yes, I was able to model and lead them through their own scientific
inquiry through hands-on experiments that taught them real world
knowledge.
When you have the opportunity to re-teach this lesson, what will
you do differently (strategies, teaching tools, assessments, etc.)
to improve student learning for all students?
Many of the students were not able to post pictures of their graphic
organizers due to time constraints. I would not require pictures of
the organizer posted but instead have them take photos or videos of
one another investigating their water cycle in a bottle.
