Volleyball Lesson Plan #1

Grade: 8

Time: 1 hour

Outcome:
Utilize, including smooth transitions, complex movement skills that combine locomotor
(traveling) skills, non-locomotor (non-traveling) skills, and manipulative (moving objects) skills
(e.g., lay-up in basketball, spike in volleyball, hoop dancing, dribbling to a shot in soccer,
rhythmical gymnastics movement, gathering a grounder and throwing to a base in softball, stick
handling to a shot in floor hockey, ball control while moving in double ball) to enhance
personal performance and enjoyment in a variety of movement activities.
Indicators:
Demonstrate the ability to repeatedly perform a skill at game appropriate speed without
hesitation.
Demonstrate the ability to manipulate objects without losing control while performing
locomotor and non-locomotor movements in a rhythmical sequence.
Activities:
WARM UP: (10 minutes)
Line the players up single file in any order. The first player holds a volleyball. The team begins to run
around the gym while passing the volleyball overhead and behind them to the back of the line. The last
person in line takes the ball and runs to the front of the line. Continue the drill until everyone has run to
the front of the line.
GAMES:
Volleyball Basketball (15 minutes)- Put class into two groups. Each will go to a basketball net.
Everyone stands in a line except one person. Everyone gets a ball except for the first person in line.
One person will stand to the right hand side near the basket ball net. That person will throw the ball to
the first person in line. The first person in line will attempt to bump or set the ball into the net. Then
everyone will rotate.
Ball of Fire Game (20 minutes)- Put class into two different groups. Each form circles on the both
sides of the gym. One player will volley the ball by setting, bumping or serving to another person. First
couple of rounds they will catch the ball and set it up again. Last couple of rounds they will actually
receive the ball with a bump or set to another person. The object of the game is to get rid of the ball as
quickly as possible as when the whistle is blown the person who last touched the ball has to sit down.
*Let them know that they may want to be careful in their passing because if they hit the ball to the
other side of the gym it might still be them that was the last to touch it when the whistle blows.
COOL DOWN: (10 minutes)
Volleyball Stretching- Using the ball players will focus on stretching and balancing.
On Ground
Roll ball out front- stretches arms and back
Roll ball out left- stretches left leg and back
Roll ball out right- stretches right leg and back

Standing Up
Circle hips while rotating ball in opposite direction- stretches hips
Hold Ball out and press forward- stretches arms and back
Hold Ball behind back and press back- stretches arms and back
Arm Rotations while holding ball- stretches arms and shoulders
Hold Ball Up and stretch up- back
Hold Ball down and stretch down- back
Using ball to massage opposite side of neck in head rotations
IF WE HAVE TIME:
Practice serves against wall.
Practice serves across gym with bump returns.
Resources:
Whistle
Volleyballs
Basketball Net
Adaptations:
If you have a student in a wheelchair it would be best to do these activities in pairs so that the
individual can actively participate. As most of these activities use hand movements and not leg
movements (as with soccer) there are very few adaptations that have to be made.
Evaluations:
Students will be able to repeatedly and without hesitation perform bumps, sets and spikes.
Students will able to complete bumps, sets and spikes as well as hand passes in a controlled
manner.
