Structural failure
| Astiucture must be able to with
sland the weight or load placed on
It. If Ht cannot do this t will collapse.
This is known as structural failure. I is
the designers job to prevent
structural failure, and he does this by
studying the loads that will be put on
fo astructure, and then putting Ina
safety factor. There ate two types of
loading on a structure and these are
known as static oad and dynamic
load.
Dynamic
load
Structural
Failure
Static Load
static load Is one where there Is no
movement involved. The load on the
structure Is stationary and does move
around, An example of this type of
load would be a fable with a ple of
books placed on It. Once the books
have been put on the table they do
not move.
Dynamic Load
Dynamic loading is when the load put
[on @ structure has some movement.
This type of loading Is harder to design
for, because the loading s constantly
‘changing. An example of this type of
loading § a bridge, as cars and lortles
of different sizes and weights are
‘constantly moving across it.
‘Question 4
Give two examples of the two types
of loading. Can you suggest why a
structure may fall?
