Carboset CR-717

Acrylic Copolymer Emulsion

TECHNICAL DATA SHEET

General Description
Carboset CR-717 resin is a non-yellowing, water white hydroxy-functional acrylic copolymer emulsion
designed to be crosslinked for optimal performance in lacquer topcoats and sealers on wood. Coatings
produced with Carboset CR-717 resin demonstrate exceptional hardness, clarity, appearance and
chemical/stain resistance. Carboset CR-717 resin can also be catalyzed for faster development of
hardness and print resistance.
The hydroxy-functionality of Carboset CR-717 resin is ideal for crosslinking to provide
performance properties exceeding that of traditional nitrocellulose lacquers. A suitable
crosslinking agent is Bayhydur XP-7063 (Bayer Corporation). Bayhydur XP-7063 is a water
dispersible aliphatic polyisocyanate which crosslinks with the hydroxy-functionality of the
Carboset CR-717 resin. The resultant coating has good pot life, excellent application
characteristics (low microfoam), rapid cure and outstanding cured-coating performance. Other
crosslinkers may also be used with Carboset CR-717 resin.

(1) Numbers in parentheses are values obtained when original 2-K coating mixes were re-inoculated with additional

(3) XAMA-2 or XAMA-7 replaces Bayhydur as the crosslinker. NOTE: Xama -2 has been discontinued by the manufacturer.

Formulation Suggestions and Raw Material Information

CURE RATE

POT LIFE

In most 2-K coating systems, reaction between

components A and B takes hours or days to
complete. While much of crosslinker is reacted within
the first 4-8 hours after the coating has dried, cure can
actually continue to progress over the next few days.
Resistance properties and hardness are two typical
measures of cure. As shown in data on page 2, Konig
hardness and MEK resistance continue to increase over
a one-week period at room temperature, with most of
the cure completed by 24 hours.

In some 2-K coating systems, the end of useable pot life

may be observed by a viscosity drop, viscosity increase,
or even gelation. However, in the formulations for

Carboset CR-717 resin included in this TDS, end of pot

life is not easily observed. No viscosity drop or increase is
typically seen. Based on extensive evaluation of coating
performance properties, such as hardness, print
resistance, chemical resistance, and MEK resistance, pot
life can be considered to be approximately 4-6 hours, at
which point some marginal drop-off in resistance
properties can be observed. This was noted for
crosslinkers Bayhydur XP-7063 and XAMA-7.

CURE RATE USE OF CATALYST

Accelerated cure rates can be obtained through the use
of small amounts of catalyst. Formulations CR-717-01D
and 02B are essentially the same, except for a small
addition of Metacure T-12 catalyst. The speed of cure
can be observed through the rate at which print
resistance develops. See page 2 for the data which
shows the catalyzed formula develops print resistance
more quickly than the uncatalyzed formula.

CROSSLINKERS
Evaluation thus far has included water dispersible
isocyanate and polyfunctional aziridine crosslinkers

(Bayhydur XP-7063 and XAMA -7). Cure response and

performance properties are generally quite similar in
testing to date. There may be a slight advantage in
early hardness development for systems which are
crosslinked with XAMA-7, but this is likely due to modest
plasticizing effects when Bayhydur XP-7063 is used.
(Bayhydur plasticizes the acrylic emulsion somewhat,
leading to a slightly softer coating immediately after
application. As the isocyanate crosslinks with the OH
functionality in the acrylic, full hardness is obtained.)
As with most crosslinkers, the amount used should be
carefully evaluated by the formulator to optimize coating
properties. Our model formulation shows a slightly less
than stoichiometric level of Bayhydur XP-7063 (NCO:OH
level 0.87:1.0). Some of the OH functionality resides
inside the acrylic emulsion miscelles, and, therefore, is
unavailable for crosslinking reactions. Other
crosslinkers may be more or less likely to react,
depending on diffusion rates into the acrylic miscelles,
and overall reaction rates. Evaluations of crosslinker
levels should include levels slightly above, at, and below
stoichiometric balance. (See data on page 2.)
Bayhydur XP7063

XAMA -7

Re-inoculation to restore cure response, can be done at

the 4 or 6 hour point or the next day. When re-inoculating,
use the same amount of crosslinker as originally used,
and add under constant agitation. (Early print resistance
will suffer slightly,
but full hardness and print properties should be observed
in 1-3 days.) All three crosslinkers noted above were
used in the re-inoculation study. (Data on pg. 2)

COALESCENT SOLVENTS
Carboset CR-717 resin responds very well to a variety of
ethylene and propylene based glycol ethers and blends.
This offers the formulator wide latitude of options when
coalescing Carboset CR-717 resin to meet the demanding
needs of customer line configurations and
temperature/humidity contraints. A very important step in
formulating with Carboset CR-717 resin is to adjust the pH
prior to coalescing. (See individual Model Formulas.)
The suggested coalescent level for Carboset CR-717
resin is 3-12% on polymer solids, although temperature,
humidity and efficiency of coalescent may alter the
optimum level. The coalescent recommendations found in
this technical data sheet provide good continuous film
formation over a broad range of conditions and should be
used for initial screening.

Formulation Suggestions and Raw Material Information

COALESCENT SOLVENTS
Characteristics of the coating such as drying time,
hardness development, hot print or block resistance,
VOC and ultimate performance can vary with the
amount and the type of different coalescents.
Optimum coalescent selection is dependent on drying
speed requirements. Hydrophilic coalescents such as
Butyl Cellosolve (Model Formula #CR-717-02B) will
evaporate more rapidly, leading to quicker development
of initial print or block resistance. Use of hydrophobic
coalescents (Model Formula #CR-717-03 may, at times,
slow the initial hardness development without altering
the final performance properties.

EFFECT OF pH ON OVERSL PROPERTIES

Formulation CR-717-02B was evaluated at pH 7.0, 7.5,
and 8.0, the typical pH range for wood coatings. The only
noticeable effect was a slight instability of the formulation
at pH below 8 (and at 9.0 or above). This was easily

resolved by replacing Surfynol 104H with Surfynol 465.

Properties examined that showed essentially no effect
throughout the pH range of 7.0-8.0 were: pot life, Konig
hardness, chemical resistance (common household
reagents), and MEK resistance.
